Meet Megan Matula of Megan Matula Photography in Baytown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Matula.

Megan, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Megan Matula Photography began years ago when my love for babies met my new found interest in photography. As a young child I always wanted to be a “baby nurse”. After realizing my dream and graduating as a registered nurse I began working in the neonatal intensive care unit, or the ICU for newborn babies. As a young adult I also always enjoyed taking pictures and was never without a disposable Kodak camera (yes before cell phones), I was always excited to capture the latest events from a trip to the beach or a friend’s birthday party.

The realization of combining these two interests came together after I met my husband. He was a professional photographer at the time and often let me use the camera and helped me learn the art. Several of my friends had babies that year and the hobby began to grow from there. Once I realized that I wanted to combine my love for babies with photography my new found passion began. I spent many, many hours researching the camera settings, lighting techniques and composition. This lead to attend newborn photography workshops were I learned to combine and apply all of these skills. Thousands of hours later, Megan Matula Photography was “born”.

Has it been a smooth road?
Perusing a career in nursing was always my plan as a child. However, hindsight leads me to believe that a degree in business may have been beneficial as well. Obviously my love for nursing and the experience I gained from it is invaluable but as with most business the transition from passion to profit is always challenging. I have been very fortunate to have a supporting husband who has stepped forward and given me advice on the business operations. As far as the actual photography aspect of the business it has been a relatively smooth transition. My personal ability and talent has increased tremendously in my art form over the years due to putting in the time and effort on education and time behind the camera. I consider myself very fortunate.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Megan Matula Photography story. Tell us more about the business.
First and foremost, Megan Matula Photography is a specialized portrait studio. I only specialize in beautiful, tailored portraits of your baby from birth to one year. My experience as a neonatal nurse is also very beneficial. I am very comfortable with the care of your newborn and caring for them throughout the process of the photography session. Parents often learn a trick or two for caring for their baby while at the studio. I always put the parents at ease and strive to have a safe, comfortable environment.

Megan Matula Photography is known for giving parents a gallery of cherished memories of their newest family member. My style is refined with an emphasis on subtle texture, color and background combinations that bring attention to the most important part of the photograph, your newborn baby. These are photos that you cannot wait to post on Facebook but will also stand the test of time to be enjoyed for generations.

How do you, personally define success? What’s your criteria, the markers you’re looking out for, etc.?
I define success as creating incredible photos of your newborn and continuing to grow my skill and technique as a photographer. This begins with the first time I talk to a new parent, listen to their wants and how to capture the uniqueness of their newborn, ensure they have a comfortable and rewarding photo session with their baby and are rewarded with beautiful photographs to cherish forever.
