Today we’d like to introduce you to Mike Hermon.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Mike. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Val’s Pals was started by a talented group of like-minded people with a passion for saving dogs. We wanted to focus on the dogs that are often overlooked and least likely to be adopted from a shelter, such as seniors, neglected dogs, sick dogs etc. As well as being an advocate for abused dogs.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
We are 100% volunteer run so many times the biggest hurdle is just having people available to do things that need to be done. We all have jobs and families in addition to rescue work.
Please tell us about Val’s Pals GSD & Large Paw Rescue.
Val’s Pals is a team of volunteers who share a passion for saving the lives of homeless, unwanted, neglected and abused dogs. Our main focus is on Seniors, Medical Cases, and Abused German Shepherds. We also handle other Large and Mix Breeds, those with medical issues and some often deemed “hard to adopt.” We work tirelessly to get the necessary medical treatments and rehabilitation these dogs need so they are adoptable. We maintain a very thorough adoption process including reference checks and home visits to ensure each of our dogs are placed with the right family.
The thing I am most proud of is the amazing transformation of many of the dogs we have taken in. We work closely with the Animal Crimes unit and have rehabilitated several dogs that were living in horrific abusive situations. I think we have a reputation for being the “go to” rescue for dogs in bad shape.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
When I was about 10-11 we went to Six Flags in Arlington, we stayed in a campground a few miles down the road. This campground had a water slide and a mountain lion! My little brother and I spent pretty much all day on the water slide but the coolest things were when they got the mountain lion out of the cage to play in the pool. They told us to stay at the top of the slide and the mountain lion was playing around at the bottom.
