Today we’d like to introduce you to Millicent Turner.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Millicent. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I have a passion for helping Students and Professionals with the challenges they face today managing their careers. I started a career coaching business name Astrid Career Coach in Richmond, Texas. Astrid Career Coach assists in helping students and professionals with their Career Goals and Development. I also focus on career-related areas, such as Business & Dining Etiquette, Cover Letters, Career Search, Interviewing Skills, Job Search Techniques, Personal Branding, and Resumes regardless of career interest. I received a bachelor’s degree in Accounting from Prairie View A&M University and my Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Our Lady of the Lake University. I’m currently a Member of the International Association of Professional Career Coaches and Etiquette Consultants (IAPO). I have 15+ years of corporate experience in which I’ve worked in various corporate sectors, which includes an Accommodation Provider, Chemical, Food Processing, Healthcare/ Pharmaceutical, Oil and Gas, Public Tax Firm, and Real Estate Investment. I currently participate in the Genesys Works Mock Interviews and a STEM Role Model.
Astrid Career Coach was established from my experiences in Corporate America working in various industries. Ever since I graduated from Prairie View A&M University, I’ve always received requests from family and friends to look over their resumes and to give some career advice. Working in Corporate America, I’ve had coworkers ask, “Could we do a mock interview?” and “Could you look at my resume?” I end up filling these requests and even had a first-time Manager asked me “My thoughts on how employees should ask to take a vacation?” I enjoyed helping these professionals and knew that this was a passion of mine and has always been interested in other people’s career path. I never thought to start my career coaching business. I do remember one day after graduating from college one of my friends asked: “How did I get a job offer off of Monster.com?” My response, “I don’t know I just uploaded my cover letter and resume.” Now these days, it’s hard to get jobs off Job boards like Monster.com, Careerbuilder.com, Glassdoor.com, Indeed.com, etc. Though I had to acquire these skills on my own, I saw just how much career coaching was needed, especially in today’s ever-changing corporate climate and how my corporate experience would be beneficial to others. I’ve had my share of failures, frustrations, and success because of that; and it empowered me to help people in their careers. I would like to help others avoid some of the mistakes by sharing my experiences and through tailoring a program specific to each’s individual career goals. I truly believe that everyone has something they can teach someone.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
My business has its ups and down I usually get my referrals from previous clients and Instagram followers. 😊 I do have incidents where potential clients would like to use my services, but they don’t believe in paying and that is okay with me. Every once a while, I do make an announcement on discounted services that I’m offering, so follow me on Social Media. 😊 My business guarantees the quality of services to my clients. The outcome is dependent on my client’s motivation, effort, persistence. I view my role as helping clients to become as well-equipped as possible to make a good career decision.
