Meet Oliver (Trey) Lawless of Yardwars in Northwest

Today we’d like to introduce you to Oliver (Trey) Lawless.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
After high school at Clear Lake High, I joined the military. My first deployment was out of Pearl Harbor on a nuclear fast attack submarine. Following my 4-year adventure on the sub, I was stationed in Yokosuka Japan where I was military police.

Ever since I was young I loved to play war games with my friends. Joining the military out of high school bolstered that love. After returning to the mainland US I met my wife, got married and had two beautiful boys. The boys are now 9 and 12 years old and are the reason for the idea of creating a Nerf War company. On my Sons 7th birthday party I searched around for ideas. The bouncy houses were ok, but everyone had those parties. Finally, I looked for a company doing a foam dart (Nerf) battle and there was none to be found. The next month I founded Yardwars. Starting a business was much more complicated that I had expected, but was a journey of love. My favorite part was creating the games from all the games in my past. My first party was a challenge, but successful. Since that day, we have grown to be known in Houston and surrounding areas. The next step will be to expand. Today we are turning customers away due to our popularity. In the coming months, we will be expanding to add more trucks to our fleet and employees to our wonderful staff. The future is bright.

Has it been a smooth road?
Logistically the most challenging part for this business is personnel. It took a very long time to get a solid group of people to run the parties. Now we have a solid group of people who our clients love and request again and again.

Our company is strictly by word of mouth advertisement by design. We started out slow, but exponentially grow every year. If we do a good job and everyone has fun we will be successful in the long run.

Of course weather is always a challenge with our business since the majority of the parties are outside, from 105-degree weather to instant flood conditions it makes for an interesting planning experience.

Our first 3 years we were also unable to get insured due to the fact we were the only business of our type, after being in business now for 4 years we have finally got full insurance.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Yardwars – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Yardwars is a mobile foam dart (Nerf) battle event hosting service. We provide everything from glasses to bases for the war. We do indoor or out, big or small. From high school events having 320 participants to a private party of 10 energized 5-year-old. We have a large variety of guns that are modified to shoot farther and painted to look cooler. Yardwars is known for having the most awesome parties around with energetic hosts and cool equipment. We are the only ones in the area that do mobile dart battles.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Houston is a wonderful city with very nice people. The heat and congested streets are what we dislike the most.
