Today we’d like to introduce you to Paris Dowd.
Paris, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I was practically born with a camera attached to my hip. As a kid, I carried around a disposable camera shooting everything in sight. When I was 10 instead of playing outside till the streetlights turned off I sat inside adjusting images in Photoshop. Little did I know then that I was teaching myself skills I would use for a lifetime.
When I entered high school, I became more serious and became the photo editor of my school’s yearbook that I was highly involved with. I took an internship at the Houston Chronicle where I got to photograph the Houston Texans and Houston Dynamo. I even had some of my photos published by NY Times lens blog! Graduation was coming, and I decided that I wanted to continue my photography into the real world. So, I created Paris Capri’ Photography. It felt like starting over, it was something brand new.
I learned the business aspect and eventually got my Associates of Arts Degree in Business from Lone Star College. I practiced many kinds of photography finding exactly what works best for me and my company. Today I am a student at the University of Houston working towards my Bachelors of Fine Arts in Digital Photography/Graphic Design.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road. Starting a business all on your own can be very difficult. There is not a boss around telling you what you are doing right or wrong. There is no guarantee you will be successful. In the past, I’ve spent money creating elaborate mini sessions all for nobody to book.
I spent a lot of time giving away free sessions just so I could gain more experience. My dedication to improvement has been a huge motivation to keep me going. I am proud of the all the bumps in the road because they have brought me to where I am today.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Paris Capri’ Photography – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I am the owner/photographer of Paris Capri’ Photography. I started this company in 2013 primarily photographing high school and college seniors. Over the years I have gained my expertise in many areas such as children, families and maternity photos. Today I am most known for my unique newborn sessions and decorative birthday scenes.
What sets me apart from others is that I do personalized photo sessions. No two sessions are ever the same. I make props for almost every client to make sure their theme really pops! I am most proud of the relationships I have built with all my clients. I am very patient with each child that comes in and the session is not over until we get a smile!
Most of my clients would describe me as patient and works very well with kids. I like to make the session feel very comfortable and easy for both the parents and the children.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
My plans for the future is to keep expanding and improving my photography business every day. I am also focusing my studies more towards graphic design to explore the combination different artistic mediums.
