Meet Rachel Norman of City Kitties Houston in Uptown/Galleria Area

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rachel Norman.

Rachel, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’ve always been an animal lover and have had cats my entire life. While in college, I started working at an animal clinic in my hometown of The Woodlands. Upon graduation, I moved to Houston to work at an animal shelter while completing my MBA.

There, I started fostering kittens and doing a lot of community outreach. This really helped solidify my love of both cats, and working in the Houston community (I even adopted my first cat at this time!) After completing my Master’s degree, I moved into an admin position at a different rescue. Since I was now working a regular schedule, I decided to start petsitting to earn extra money. I quickly realized that while I love dogs, I would be more successful by focusing on a cats-only approach. I launched City Kitties Houston in December 2017 and have been happy to gained many excellent clients since then!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I am lucky to say that so far, I have been steadily increasing in business since I launched two years ago. My main struggle has been balancing this increase in business with my full-time job and personal life. Because of this, I decided to take a hiatus from catsitting for the 2019 holidays to help me refocus on my goals for the business. However, this is only possible because of the amazing clients I have gained who are kind and understanding that everyone is human!

City Kitties Houston – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
City Kitties Houston is a cats-only petsitting company, of which there are only a couple in Houston. I am able to service quite a few neighborhoods in Houston, with my base being Uptown/Galleria area and surrounding. I am able to give daily medications (including injectable medications) and I offer once or twice-daily visits. I love to provide great client service and communication, which I hope is something that I am known for!

I am most proud of the great number of clients who utilize my services regularly, whether they are out of town frequently or only do one or two big vacations a year. I love to build relationships with the cats I visit. In fact, one of my favorite things about catsitting is seeing previously shy/hiding cats come to feel comfortable around me and even solicit affection. I would say that is one of my specialties as well.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
For me, as this is still a side venture at this point, I do not necessarily define success by large revenue or continuously full bookings. However, I am looking to build relationships with clients, which is why I try to define success by the amount of repeat clients I have. I’m happy to say that more than 60% of my clients are repeat clients, which tells me that I must be doing something right.
