Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Hardin.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Sarah. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I’ve always been known as the creative or “artsy” kid; at an early age, I took an interest in all things artistic and all things creative. I was gifted my first camera by my godfather when I was about 11 years old, it was a huge Polaroid camera that spits out photos that developed as you shook them, you know the kind. I fell in in love with taking photos immediately. I became that kid that was obsessed with creating “photoshoots” with my friends or even dressing up our family dog for portraits. I developed a passion for capturing life around me through photography.
As life progressed, I attended college for graphic design; while still doing photography on the side. I photographed my first wedding while in college and even shot some photos for local a restaurant on the same day as my portfolio show.
Once I received my Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, I took a position at PR Luxury Media Magazine as a graphic designer and the in-house photographer. I did countless photoshoots within the studio for boutiques, athletes, interviewees, headshots, cover shoots, you name it! I loved getting to interact with the person in front of the camera and making them feel comfortable and confident.
Since then, I took a break to start a family. Which shifted my focus to children, families, lifestyle, and wedding photography. There is something about capturing those precious moments in life; the ones between siblings, the ones of proud parents, the ones of new life, and the ones of blushing brides. Those are the ones you cherish forever.
Life goes by so fast! Little ones grow up too soon! I want to use my creative eye and technical skills to give clients something that will last, a memory they can hold and includes all the little details.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As we all know, personal life must take precedence over professional life. My husband and I have had to endure the loss of our first child through stillbirth and our third through a miscarriage. We had to put our professional pursuits on pause. I know what its like to have your life shattered to pieces and to pick up those pieces; knowing your life will never be the same. However, there is beauty in the healing process. With God as my foundation, I’ve learned to lean on Him through all aspects of life.
Now with two beautiful children, I know the importance of capturing our lives through photography. I can not stress that enough to my clients! Don’t wait till you’re at your ideal weight or till you can do something about the wrinkles appearing on your face; there will never be a right time to have photos taken. We aren’t promised tomorrow and when you invest in family portraits you are investing in a lifetime of memories.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about SS Photography & Co. – what should we know?
SS Photography & Co. (SSP) is my company; the name stems from my husband’s and my name: Sam and Sarah.
Each time we meet someone new their remarks are, “Oh, S and S, that’s easy to remember!” My husband, who is also very creative, operates as the videographer or second shooter for large events or weddings.
SSP began with the idea of a turnkey business operation, offering more than just photography! Yes, I offer lifestyle and wedding photography; but we also offer invitation/illustration designs, videography, day-of-coordination, and wedding officiant. The idea is to make things as easy and carefree for the client as possible; while still producing quality work.
The process of wedding, party, or holiday planning can become an enjoyable one when you have SSP along for the ride! SSP serves in the North Houston/The Woodlands, and surrounding areas; but also travels for clients.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
There are three qualities that have contributed to my success: creativity, flexibility, and passion. A creative mind is needed to imagine the best photo shoot that fits the client’s personality; treating every session uniquely!
Flexibility is also essential because let’s face it, lighting/weather doesn’t always cooperate, and babies/toddlers aren’t interested sitting still. The ability to “roll with it” and quickly change accordingly is key in undesirable conditions.
Finally, passion is always what shines through in my work. I’m extremely enthusiastic or passionate about my craft and delivering my very best for each client.
