Today we’d like to introduce you to Scott Wells.
Scott, can you briefly walk us througgh your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’m originally from Singapore and have beeni active in sports my whole life. In high school, I decided to play basketball and run track. I had scholarship offers in both but decided to play basketball.
During high school was always made all district and county teams. I was offensive player of the year my junior year. My college career was short lived because I decided that I wanted to travel so I dropped out of college. Travelling teaches you something you can never learn in a book. Plus, I had an entrepreneurial mindset and didn’t see much use in a degree.
After all, college is the fastest way to go into debt and nothing trumps hard work, dedication, and perseverance. I have lived and visited many places around the world, Singapore, London, Malaysia, Amsterdam, China, and Taiwan just to name a few. Also, I have trained with many top level coaches from the U.S. as well as abroad.
I started my training career up in New York with a company called Equinox. Soon after I moved back to Texas and started with 24hr fitness. I trained there for a year and a half and eventually got fired because they wanted me to be more a salesman than a trainer. I have always let my training speak for itself instead of praying off people’s emotional decision making. So when I got fired I basically did my Jerry McGuire and said “Who’s leaving with me?” I had quite a few people that believed in me so I started training out of my garage at my house and it was going very well. This is where I became a CrossFit affiliate. At the time, I believe I was one of the first hundred affiliates in the world. I flew out to the original CrossFit gym in Santa Cruz and trained with all the originals of CF.
Greg Glassman “owner of CF” taught my certification. At the time CF was a great community and still very “Grass Roots” not like it is now. Anyhow, I was training a lot of people at my house and a MMA gym wanted me to come in and train there. That only lasted three months because a lot of their clients started coming to me for their fitness need and I don’t think they like that too much. They upped my rent by three times the amount and basically forced me out. At this point to went back to my garage and started a full commercial gym out of my garage. My goal was to get the H.O.A. “home owners association” to tell me I can’t run a business out of my house.
About 8 to 9 months later, that’s exactly what had happened. I had 33 people training out of my house at that time. I knew I couldn’t afford to not get a space. I found an Office/Warehouse space and it was 1800 sq. ft. I trained out of there for a year and a half and had built up the members to 150. I did not want to keep renting so I decided to look for another spot. Just so happens when I use to train at 24 hour fitness there was a woman named Gayle that told me if I ever needed a space to contact her. Well guess who comes walking through the door with her niece to come train with me. It was a sign to me that this is meant to be. Gayle owned a huge business park and she sold me her building. I paid half a million and now I had myself a 5000 sq. ft. building on an acre and a half. I have had as many as 300 members here. More importantly, there have been 30 plus people that have left and started their own gyms that have trained here at Lift Strong Run Fast. Some might think this would upset me but it does not. It’s inspiring, it’s what leaders are supposed to do.
Currently I’m about to offer a LSRF certification and affiliation process. That should kick off around the beginning of 2018. I want people to experience what I have experienced. Finding something that they love to do, so they never work a day in their life. All while earning a great living that goes far beyond what you financially earn.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It’s all been a struggle, but when you love something, you find a way to make it work.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Lift Strong Run Fast is a strength and conditioning program based of recovery. This is what makes it so unique. I do all my own programming. I know exactly how we are going to recover from week to week and that is what allows us to train hard 52 weeks out of the year.
I’m what sets me apart from other programs. My experiences and knowledge. I like to tell people you don’t win the life time achievement award at 18. Now that I’m almost 40, I understand a lot more, but more importantly I understand I still have a lot more to learn.
What were you like growing up?
I was spoiled. My parents were very affluent. My father was in the oil business and my mother was a stay at home mom. They both taught me the value of a dollar. Even though we had everything, my parents always taught me to have a big heart and be humble. Fight for those who can’t fight for themselves. I always look at my childhood and have great memories.
I hope my children can look back one day and say the same.
