Meet Serenia Jefferson of SlayedCrownss in Missouri City

Today we’d like to introduce you to Serenia Jefferson.

Serenia, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My passion for hair began when I started doing my own hair at 12 years old. I taught myself how to do everything by using YouTube. Once I got the hang of doing my own hair, I realized how much I love it. Once I got a little older, I would say around 15, I did a big chop and went completely natural. I would always make homemade deep conditioners and mix oils to grow out my hair quickly.

With consistency, I got my hair to waist length in about three years. So I decided that I wanted to pursue a career in the beauty industry after high school. The first step to pursuing my career in the beauty industry was to go to cosmetology school and graduate. It wasn’t easy taking that first step until I got the support I needed. Once I did get that support, I enrolled at Ogle School Hair, Skin, Nails while pregnant and also working a part-time job. Juggling school and work while pregnant wasn’t easy so I left school in November of 2018. I returned May of 2019 and continued school.

When I came back to school, I started my own business selling luxury hair extensions and also being a hairstylist. Later on, I started my own business selling luxury lashes as well. I don’t want to limit myself to anything so I do it all! The support that I got is the reason why I was able to start my businesses and go to school. It has been a long and challenging journey but without ambition and consistency, I wouldn’t be where I am today.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Some challenges were being a full-time mom, working and going to school all at once.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite memory from childhood would have to be when I made my first wig using hair bonding glue. The funny thing about it was that I used my little sister’s head to make the wig on. And once the glue dried it got stuck to her hair and I had no idea what to do or how to get it off. My parents weren’t home yet so we were trying panicking And laughing trying to get this wig off of her head. So all of a sudden my parents were at the front door while I’m still tugging at the wig to get it off of her head. So I hid my little sister in the bathroom and ran to get scissors. I ran back in the bathroom and carefully cut the wig out of her hair. I still don’t think my parents know about that til this day.
