Shekia, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
A little over a year ago, I purchased a “Retro iPhone case” do you remember the old 80’s-90’s huge phones that had an antenna sticking up? Haha, well that type of phone case. I’ve always been a different individual that loves the odd thing over the norm (Hint I’m an Aquarius). This one purchase literally was changing my life the day I received my package and I had no idea at the time. Everyday no matter where I go at least 3-5 different individuals would stop me in my track just to either compliment me on my phone case, request I share the link so they too can purchase, or even just to touch it. As time goes on so did the many compliments; I probably know half of Houston by now all because of my super cool phone case, haha!
Over time I became immune to someone stopping me just to acknowledge my case. I became so immune that I lost sight of the value in this item I possess. May 21, 2020 I lost my employment due to Covid-19; not sure where I would go from there, I took that time out during the stay at home order to do a lot of self-awareness, research, and self-repair. I was not only lost but worried about my present and future not sure where to go after dedicating so much to one organization for so many years to only be left with fear. I started to pray more hoping for some sort of guidance and direction and not long after one thing resurfaced my “Retro Cellphone case.” Weeks passed by and I fell into a light depression I felt as though I didn’t necessarily have a purpose, I didn’t have anything to show for as an accomplishment for myself. I remember saying a little prayer one night because I was so weary and about two days later, I met this amazing young lady. I was at a function with a friend when four different individuals approached me requesting I send them the link to purchase a case like mine.
Without hesitation, I provided them with the link, but then a 5th person approached me. Her approach was different, her approach was invested, She said “I love your phone case, where did you get it from? Do you mind if I get the link to purchase” I immediately said sure and started giving her the link when she stopped me in mid-sentence and said, “Why are you underestimating your worth?” She said, “I just told you that I love your case and you began to give me someone else’s link to purchase. Why not have your own link that you share with others” She also said “You obviously have something everyone wants, you possess a valuable piece of item that may seem simple, but is really powerful so use it to make magic.” We had an hour-long conversation and I have no idea, but I truly believe she was the answer to my prayers a couple of nights back. I prayed for guidance, strength and understanding she truly gave me all three; in several parts of our conversation she would mention things and give words of encouragement on the very exact thing I prayed to be encouraged on very odd, but I just know that was God working. The very last thing she said before leaving was “promise me you won’t walk out these doors the same” I said to her “What about wasted time?” She replied, “Clap at it and learn from it.. don’t worry about wasted time worry about leaving out those doors a changed woman moving forward.” I walked out that night a changed woman and it feels amazing! I began to do all my research on how to build a small business, on my product line I wanted to invest in, on how I would brand everything! I finally felt I had a purpose or something to accomplish and look forward to.
It’s been two months since I had this experience and two months since I’ve been piecing my puzzle together, I faced several obstacles health-wise, financially and emotionally, but I never gave up. I proudly stand here today attesting that anything is possible with God on your side so keep him first and secondly stay focus and keep moving forward no matter how rough the road gets. I could sit here for hours and tell you stories of my life experiences, but none of it matters because without those powerful experiences, I couldn’t be this phenomenal woman I am today. So really quickly before I go! Just a background on my choice of business name. “Medley737” my vision is to build a platform of a “one stop shop” I want to possess a variety of essential things we use in our daily life; the definition of medley is variety of different items or people and I want this small business to reflect as such. “737” stands for a significant time in my childhood. Around the age of 9yrs old I was bullied for not knowing how to read analog clocks; well one night I was on the phone with my childhood bestie and she asked what time is it my mom literally only had analog clocks around the house, but I decided to take a shot at it anyway! I shouted 7:37… my mom was walking by and she said, “YAYYY! YOU DID IT !! YOU READ TIME ITS 7:37.” Oh how much joy, relief and pleasure that brought to me at such a young age I can still feel how I felt right now… Keep pushing everyone you got this!
Has it been a smooth road?
It’s been a bit challenging because I’m starting from scratch with no experience. Not sure where to begin let alone where it goes. I do a lot of researching, but nothing gives you exact steps on what to do. You’re basically bringing your imaginations to life without a director. Along with self-teaching, An injury I sustained a year ago began to interfere with my daily activities to accomplish things and then I was affected by COVID personally. Financially I still had to manage my current lifestyle unemployed along with starting up a business. I am proud to stand here and say I have overcome everything that was set out to destroy me with God’s grace.

Medley737 is a variety type of small business… Definitely the main source of the business is my Unique cellphone case line- which features all retro covers from Airpod covers to cellphone covers and of course, my popular phone case that started it all will be available. Medley737 will also have Notary Public Services available, Meal plans/Meal Preps and so much more to come. I am also a local PLUS SIZE MODEL so I will be adding in a modeling organization 2021! I am most proud of the fact I even formed something so great, so different that catches attention. My business literally reflects who I am as a person very unique, different and embrace all things. I believe my platform of making different products and services accessible to my customers sets me apart from the rest, kind of like a mini Amazon
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love Houston! Houston has been home since childhood. I love the “Medley” of individuals we hold! I don’t like traffic haha, but that’s everywhere.
