Meet Trailblazer Chrysta Joy Jaucian

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chrysta Joy Jaucian.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started making music when I was pretty young. You could say being a musician runs in the family. My mom and uncles all play guitar and most of my family sings, so I was always surrounded by music and encouraged to make music too. As I grew up, I took music more seriously by taking vocal lessons and guitar classes till I felt like I had a solid foundation. Once I got to high school, I slowly became more comfortable with my vocal style, started to post more covers online and, well, somehow people liked it! I eventually made my music account and that’s where I am now. I’ve had to take some breaks here and there because life’s been really crazy, but I try to post when I can.

Has it been a smooth road?
It’s been a bit of a rocky road, admittedly. I actually had two hip surgeries in 2019, so bouncing back to being a full-time student and serving in ministry while rehabbing and dealing with life was definitely a huge challenge. As hard as it was then, music played a huge role in helping me cope with everything that happened. I’d take my guitar out while I was recovering and basically sing out my feelings. Even now, I’m super busy so I try and make time just to play music and ground myself. Music’s like a safe haven for me (along with prayer and running), so I use it to cope and get all the thoughts out of my head. It’s helped me make sense of everything in my head.

My advice to young women just starting their journey is to keep believing in yourself and taking a chance! If it doesn’t work out, try again and don’t give up. It takes a lot of perseverance and faith to pursue what you want to do. Trust yourself and your craft, and don’t stop growing. Growing gets uncomfortable sometimes, but it’s worth it in the end.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
So I just graduated with my bachelor’s degree from UH in May 2020, and I’m working on my prerequisites for physical therapy school. A day in the life usually involves prayer, working out, going to class/doing homework, hanging out with my friends and occasionally performing acoustic covers around Houston. It’s not every day that someone juggles all of that at once, so it definitely sets me apart in that way.

When it comes to my music, I’m quite proud of the small unique details I add. Every musician has their own little quirks, and mine happens to be adding little vocal runs and sometimes changing lyrics to fit my story. Since I usually perform acoustically, I try to make the guitar shine a little bit more with some fingerpicking style and such. I’m also proud that I’ve had an amazing support system while juggling all of this because – if you couldn’t tell– I’m pretty busy balancing everything out and I definitely wouldn’t be able to do this alone.

Do you recommend any apps, books or podcasts that have been helpful to you?
Apps:
-Google Calendar. It keeps me on track with everything going on
-Nike Training Club. I really like working out, so this app has a ton of workouts for everything.
-Nike Running Club. Running gives me a headspace to really focus on the present moment and nothing else, and this app is really good with tracking my mileage and providing guided runs to listen to while I run.
-8mm. This app helps me create this really cool rustic aesthetic for my videos and I’ve fallen in love with it.

Books:
-the Bible. God’s word always keeps me grounded with whatever is going on.
-Endure: Mind, Body, and the Curiously Elastic Limits of Human Performance by Alex Hutchinson. My surgeon actually recommended this book to me since I was studying psychology during undergrad, and it’s helped me understand my mental endurance as a runner and as a person. It’s helped me realize that I can extend my limitations in every part of my life slowly but surely.
