Today we’d like to introduce you to Danielle Fortune.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My passion for hair started as a little girl, spending my summers on the north side in my aunt’s hair salon. Separating rollers, hair, organizing client profile cards, anything I could to soak up the energy and observe the fascinating art of the hair industry. When I entered high school, I applied for the cosmetology program offered to 11th & 12th-grade students and was accepted into the program. Pushing through obstacles including teen pregnancy, I graduated from high school in 2007 as a certified cosmetologist. I worked in many corporate salons such as tgf hair cutter and jcpennys salon. In 2016, I made the decision to transition and dedicate my services to naturals and or transitioning clients. Educated myself through classes in the natural world and working in salons like tendrils and curls and eclectic Vibez, I began to find my way in the natural hair industry. In February, I opened my salon Crowned & Kissed in the Stafford, Missouri City area. The business has been amazing and I have been blessed to share so many intimate moments with beautiful naturals from all over working together to embrace this amazing journey.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Struggles would be an understatement! Lol, no although the hair industry can be cutthroat, I am grateful for every stage of my career, every bump in the road. Im continuously learning every day and if those obstacles had not come, I probably would not have pushed as hard to get where I am. It’s something about when your back is against the wall. It’s an extra push to go hard. All or nothing!
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Crowned & Kissed – what should we know?
I specialize in natural hair. Focusing on the health and growth of natural hair and embracing all curl textures. I am known for product knowledge and focusing on healthy hair. Locs, twist, wash ‘n go’s, protective styles, and blowouts are a few of my specialties protecting and never compromising the integrity of the hair
So much of the media coverage is focused on the challenges facing women today, but what about the opportunities? Do you feel there are any opportunities that women are particularly well positioned for?
I feel like right now is the time for all women to get out here and get it. Houston is a big city and the opportunities are endless. You can be anything you want to be especially in this industry/artistry. Hairstylist; MUA, lash techs, designers, artist, etc., we all work together and keep each other going. What I can’t do I have a dope colleague who can. I feel like everybody can eat!
