Meet Trailblazer Jacqueline Barbery

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jacqueline Barbery.

Jacqueline, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I never considered myself “girly” growing up. I hated dresses, bows, dress up shoes, you name it. I would literally cry at the thought of wearing dressy clothing. I also never played with Barbies. They scared me. I would much rather play outside with my brothers. As I started to grow up, my curiosity for “girly” things grew. I started to wear makeup little by little, nothing crazy, just mascara and a bit of foundation. A very, very, very bad eyebrow waxing experience is what really pushed me into makeup. After being left with almost no eyebrows, I began to watch videos on how to fill in eyebrows. There was no way I was going to walk around browless! Well, one eyebrow tutorial led to a foundation routine video, which led to an “eyeshadow for beginners” video, and so on and so on. That’s where my love for makeup began. I would stay up all night watching YouTube tutorials and would practice on myself the following days. It wasn’t pretty at first, and even though they say practice makes perfect, I know I still have a lot to learn.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
In my own experience, it hasn’t been easy. I’m a single mom and full-time student. Finding a balance between my home life, my school life, and what I love to do is the most difficult thing for me. My advice is to not give up on what you love doing, especially if you’re helping others with your talent.

Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I mostly do makeup for special events such as weddings, prom, parties, etc. I would say that I am the proudest of the growth in my skill since I first started freelancing. Something that sets me apart is that I am completely self-taught. I have never been to a cosmetology school or taken a beauty course.

So much of the media coverage is focused on the challenges facing women today, but what about the opportunities? Do you feel there are any opportunities that women are particularly well positioned for?
Women have the ability to carry and give life. Women can do anything.
