Meet Trailblazer Lakiesha Elaine

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lakiesha Elaine.

Lakiesha, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
It all started with a leap of faith. My love for make-up and beauty care all began in my early high school days. The epic winged liner and glossy lips were a signature! I would always stay up for hours watching countless YouTube Make-up Gurus learning tips and tricks of the trade before it actually was a “thing”. Watching these girls from all walks of life using their creativity and innovation to create so many different works of art is exactly what I knew I wanted to do with my life.

Becoming a young mother at 21 years old and going through a toxic relationship I thought I had to abandon my passions to focus on becoming a responsible adult to provide a stable life for my daughter. It wasn’t until about five years later in 2017 after giving birth to my son and after suffering from depression that found my light again. I really wanted to focus on starting making myself feel good again and what did it all boil down to?! BEAUTY! No matter how many different avenues I tried to go down, none have satisfied the appetite of my soul. Creating has always been something I’ve loved. It’s what’s natural to me. I finally decided to stop denying what the universe kept pushing in my face and go for it.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Let me be honest, if I said the road leading up to this point was easy that would be a bald-faced lie. Honestly, I would have to ask what obstacles didn’t I have to face, if not still facing. I wasn’t one of the lucky ones who had one goal, was able to stick to it and become successful. For a while, I struggled with knowing who I am as a person and what mark I wanted to leave on this earth. I’ve had many people, loved ones, and friends planted the big cloud of doubt in my mind which I believed and questioned my abilities. I wasted many crucial year’s watching while I could have been creating because of fear. I had to realized you cannot allow someone else’s insecurites to project onto me or my dreams.  With that being said, advice I would give other men or women striving to pursue their dreams is to remember your dream belongs to you and you only. You are the one who sets the tone for your future, therefore, you are the only one responsible for making it happen. That old saying ”You can achieve anything you put your mind to” is not an old wives tale, it’s fact.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about BeautyAmongBeasts – what should we know?
I am an up and coming entrepreneur specializing in all things beauty. Starting with providing Raw Indian Hair Bundles to hairstylists throughout the Houston area as well as individual customers and I also have my own brand of custom lashes as well. I am currently in the process of learning how to create my own skincare and make-up products as well that will be available in a new line coming in the near future.

As a brand, I am most proud of spreading the importance of self-love and self-care. It is my mission to not only help others see what makes them beautiful but also provide the most natural and effective products that not only people can love, but also loves them back!

Do you feel like there was something about the experiences you had growing up that played an outsized role in setting you up for success later in life?
Growing up as a bi-racial child to an immigrant single-mother was hard. My mom had to work extra hard to provide for me and my older brother all on her own. She did not have a high school diploma and struggled finding work that gave her the ability to give us the life she always wanted for her children. Watching my mother work herself to the bone but never making one complaint taught me the importance of a strong work ethic. While working full time and caring for two small kids alone my mother also went to school to obtain her GED. I can only think of all the sacrifices she to make wishing better future for her children a reality and that taught me importance of humility.

Unfortunately I didn’t have much family around growing up and I had a hard time learning where I belonged. I didn’t always love myself and suffered from low self-esteem. Since I was a baby I had extreme eczema which left me with painful and embarrassing rashes all over my neck, stomach, arms, and legs. I never really felt ”beautiful”. I closed myself off from experiencing many simple things other girls my age never thought twice about. I never wanted to be in the spotlight and preferred to be hidden  in the background in fear others would point out my flaws.

The majority of my middle/high school years I was always a lone wolf. That feeling of loneliness followed me throughout my adult life and played a major part in my own bad decision making, missed opportunities, and also made me extremely introverted. The reality of it is I suffered silently. I always strived to always look the best and be the best to fit in. In realizing that I also realized that it’s not what you do to fit it that makes you stand out, it’s authentication of self that makes you special. Now, I strive to be as true to my self and my dreams as possible.
