Meet Trailblazer Navida Estupinan

Today we’d like to introduce you to Navida Estupinan.

Navida , let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started doing art by accident! I call it the gift and curse of procrastination. I wanted to make a heartfelt Christmas gift for a person that was in my life, I had no idea what I was going to make, but I wanted her to know that it came from love. I waited until two days before Christmas, stayed up all night and came up with a collage that embodied who she was. When people saw it, they loved it and praised how beautiful it was. From that point, I started to make collages with that same idea in mind, but they began to take on even more. They started to tell stories and history, primarily black history. It became my goal to not only educate with my art but also for the viewer to have a cathartic experience. I feel that the bigger picture we see is always made up of smaller pictures & each piece has a significant impact on the larger image at hand.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
My journey has not been smooth but it has been enlightening. At the time I started, I was a single parent trying to provide for my son and trying to make sure that I was raising him in the best way possible. I gave up numerous times but each time I had to pull myself back together and realize that what I was doing was not just for me. The advice that I would give to anyone just starting out on their journey to fulfill their passion is to take it one day at a time. And in those moments that you don’t feel like going, take a moment to reflect on why you are doing whatever it is that you are doing. Remember who and what you are doing it for and each time you will also be able to restart again.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Nostalgic Expressions Art & Photography – what should we know?
I specialize in mixed media collages and photography. The thing that I’m most proud of about my brand is that I provide a view of things that a lot of people may have never understood. I’ve done pieces about African American history, mental health, LGBTQ issues and many more. I take my work very seriously and whether I’m making a Collage piece, a regular painting or shooting photos for a client, every single portion that I provide back to the world undergoes an in-depth look at the details. I want to be sure the message comes across in a clear manner.

We’re interested to hear your thoughts on female leadership – in particular, what do you feel are the biggest barriers or obstacles?
Although the world knows that women rule it, we often come under different and more severe scrutiny than our male counterparts. Women have to work harder to prove that we are capable. In addition to being mothers and wives, women have the hardest roles in the workplace and are forced to overcome numerous obstacles to be successful. I know for me being African American, a single mother and also identifying as a lesbian I’ve often been overlooked in the times I thought I should be getting ahead. I was always taught that nothing worth having comes easy though, so that’s what I always remember in those moments.
