Meet Trailblazer Sophie Newman

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sophie Newman.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started after being laid off from Hewlett Packard Enterprise in 2016 after just moving to Houston (I’m from Florida originally). I spent some time deciding between going to another company or starting my own. I eventually jumped all the way in and began working for myself! I started working from home, going out and meeting people, and getting to know the Houston community. I got to where I am today by forging great relationships with local entrepreneurs and trying to genuinely connect with the people I met.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Definitely not the smoothest road having begun from a layoff. I struggled trying to figure out how to price my offerings, meeting the right people, and how to get a business running quickly. I also struggled with working with the right clients: ones who listened to my advice and appreciated my input.

My advice to women who are just getting started is to:
Decide what you want to do or decide on a path. If you’re not sure, it’s hard for people to help you achieve your goals.

Never give up on what you want to achieve! It may take some time or it may not be in the form you expected, but hustling and working smart will help you move in the right direction.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Florida Winter Marketing – what should we know?
I’m a branding and marketing strategist. I specialize in helping service brands become known for what they do by uniting who they are, what they say, and what’s working. I combine branding and marketing – what you’re saying with how you’re reaching people – which is unique within the market. I bring a holistic and strategic perspective to as well – I give advice and guidance that is specific to my clients and their needs. I want to look at the whole picture to develop a research and insight-driven approach to developing and maintaining their presence.

I also have a background in entrepreneurship growing up – I grew up in the family business and have a passion for helping small businesses succeed. I have an MS in Marketing from Texas A&M University and a BS in Advertising from the University of Florida. I’m known for helping small businesses develop a cohesive, captivating, and attracting online presence. I also volunteer my time to work with local non-profits – I built a website for Hope Reigns last year and have also worked with Nerdy Girl Success.

I’m most proud of my client work – I love seeing them move on to more and more successful ventures! Or in some cases, I love to be a part of their continued success and growth.

Which women have inspired you in your life?
My mom has inspired me with her work ethic and commitment to getting the job done. She’s who I look up to! She supported me when I wanted to go into business for myself and has been there to help me talk through what my parents have gone through in business as well.
