Meet Trailblazer Zina Oduah

Today we’d like to introduce you to Zina Oduah.

Zina, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
The story of how I got started probably would sound a little familiar to you, it started in 2016 at my friend’s apartment in Atlanta one night. I visited my friend Tiara and we had a discussion about creating a skincare product. This conversation started by expressing our opinions on the skincare products that were in our local community. We both agreed that most of the skincare products had too many ingredients and were filled with chemicals that probably caused more breakouts. At that point, we mentioned that we could create our own products by using simple, natural and organic ingredients. So, we started our research on different products, best ingredients for the skin, and what ingredients would work well with each other. We never truly acted on the idea until 2018 when I moved to Houston, Texas and stayed with my sister. I was low on cash and I wanted something hydrating for my skin. I remember researching different ingredients that would work well for my skin. I was going for a body exfoliator so I went into my sister’s kitchen and grabbed the brown sugar. and I had my own coconut oil and started experimenting with these two simple ingredients that created the most hydrating product that I had ever used. This was the start of Lavish Skin. I am one of the co-founders of Lavish Skin.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
My personal experience with starting my first business was quite the journey. I definitely learned and still learning so much as to how to run a business and what works well for my business. First, I would encourage anybody that wants to start a business, to make sure you are in the right headspace as you are building your business. Second, plan, plan, plan. Plan and write out everything that you will need for your business. Any ideas that you have that will help, write it out and act on those ideas. Also, it is okay to take a risk if you feel like it is best for you and your business. Never be afraid to take chances on yourself. A reminder, if your business is not taking off immediately, do not worry, keep going. Take your time and be patient. Everything will fall into place.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Lavish Skin – what should we know?
My brand is all about embracing the natural and organic culture with love. Yes, we are a skincare brand but we also encourage everyone that uses our products to pour self-love and self-care intentions as you use the products. Why? When we use skin care products, we sometimes only worry about our skin and how to achieve clear skin, but we also sometimes forget about embracing ourselves. We handcraft all of our skincare products, so we intentionally add love and care to each product. Each customer receives more than just a skincare product. We add natural and organic ingredients from our local markets and also grow ingredients like herbs and plants. This makes each Lavish Skin product special. We are known for having the most hydrating body exfoliator that also creates a natural glow and smooth skin that feels like silk. Lavish Skin is more than a skincare band it is love and care.

Do you recommend any apps, books or podcasts that have been helpful to you?
I personally love listening to podcast. The podcasts that I am currently listening to is “Black Girl In Om” by Lauren Ash and Deun Ivory. They inspire me within my personal and entrepreneur life, with motivating topics and encouraging to mentally heal the mind.

Another podcast I enjoy is “Earn Your Leisure” by Rashad Bilal they are more into finances and business topics which is great for someone who is an entrepreneur. An app will recommend is Mint, this app is about how to budget your finances, this is amazing for anybody overall. I am always on the go so instead of creating a spreadsheet, I can add my bank account to the app and plug-in the numbers I need for my budget and it will calculate what I need to see how I am doing with my budget and finances.

Another app I use for my content is called over. It’s awesome for my Instagram platform, it’s simple to use and great for people that are creative.
