Today we’d like to introduce you to Willy Tejeda.
Willy, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Well, I have worked in the restaurant industry since I was a teenager. I worked just about every position in a restaurant, going from dishwasher, busboy, waiter, manager, etc. In every place I worked, I learned something new either about food, service, and/or management.
I studied graphic design in Lone Star College. My restaurant jobs helped me pay for school and my living expenses. When I graduated from college, I found a management job for a corporate food chain that offered more growth opportunity. As much as I loved art and graphic design, I really seemed to like the restaurant environment more. Later in 2009, when the economy crashed, I lost my job due to force reductions. I started to look for other jobs and went back to the retail industry.
In 2013, a friend of mine started a small restaurant inside a Dr Gleem Car Wash. He soon invited me to work together with him. I thought it was a cool concept, and I agreed to work together with him. After a few months, he told me he wanted to do something different and wanted to sell his part of the business, so I decided to stay bought him out.
I started fresh with a new name “Taco Burger Cafe”. I figured it summarized what we sold: tacos and burgers. I knew I liked working in a restaurant, but It really wasn’t until then that I began to realize my passion for food and service. I decided to keep some of my friend’s original menu items, but soon I began to explore for new ones. I added the Tacoburger: a grilled cheese burger topped with grilled chicken, melted colby-jack cheese, and guacamole. Now serving three different styles of taco burgers. Also, serving breakfast all day like breakfast tacos, French toast, breakfast quesadillas, etc.
Our unique concept surprises many people when they come in the first thing they say; “a restaurant inside a car wash”? We offer dine in, take out, and catering. We serve great quality gourmet tacos, burgers, salads, and all day breakfast. You can bring your car for service and eat meanwhile or you can come in just to eat, we offer restaurant parking. Best of all, I do still enjoy it and it offers me endless opportunities to make something new every day and I am very grateful for that.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It hasn’t been easy, not one bit. I biggest challenge is to bring customers into the restaurant from outside the carwash business. We are tucked in the carwash so not many people can see us from the road, unless they turn to drive in the carwash. In bad weather, the carwash is slow so we are still trying to market our business outside the carwash to grow the number of customers. I have slowly gotten better.

everything is made to order fresh. We use shell eggs, buy fresh meats for steak and chicken and trim and marinade our meats in the house. we also offer real fruit smoothies, cooked to order Angus beef hot dogs and burgers. Our set up is an open kitchen so you can see us cooking your food.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I would like to have our own store front to have better visibility and access.
