The Woodlands Fencing Academy Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to the Woodlands Fencing Academy. WFA was founded in 2009 and opened the permanent facility in 2011. They employ three coaches and a manager.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Growth has been very steady! We feel fortunate to have such a wonderful group of fencers and parents that make running a club such as this a joy. We started with 15 students and have grown to almost 100.

Woodlands Fencing Academy – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
WFA teaches the Olympic sport of epee fencing to anyone interested in a life sport. Our students start around the age of 6 in a fun Musketeer class. Fencing is a life sport and anyone interested can start fencing at any time. We welcome all ages and ability levels.

We also provide off-campus PE credit for our regular students as well as a few private schools. In addition, we are happy to provide home-school student groups with fencing classes tailored around their schedules.

Our sparkling fencing gym is conveniently located in the Grogan’s Mill area of The Woodlands, Texas. We have over 5000 square feet which includes 10 fencing strips on professional grade wood flooring, 15 tons of AC, armory, pro shop, parent waiting area, changing rooms, free Wi-Fi, and ample parking.

We have three coaches and an office manager to keep things running smoothly. The Houston area also offers many opportunities to compete-which is required for advancement of skills. Competitions also are fun, allowing fencers to make life-long friends around the state and around the nation.

Kids love fencing because it is fun. Parents love fencing for many reasons- it is a confidence booster, encourages physical activity, increases agility and flexibility, is a healthy competitive outlet, there are college opportunities and everyone fences- no sitting on the bench! Parents also love it that it is indoors, no bugs and no sunscreen required!

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Our proudest moment happens almost daily. Since fencing isn’t a main-stream sport such as football or baseball, we regularly get kids coming in to try it that aren’t great at the ‘ball’ sports. It is very satisfying to see them come in to try a class and at the end pull off their mask with the biggest smile on their face. They have found ‘their’ sport and that is what makes us proud.
