Meet Yolanda Vincent of Versatile Ego

Today we’d like to introduce you to Yolanda Vincent.

Yolanda, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I wasn’t always into having my own fashion boutique…… I was raised by my grandmother & she really cared about appearance! I mean, every holiday, school photo & activity I was in growing up, she made sure I was dressed to impress! We also use to watch miss America, USA, & all the other pageants all the time! I wanted to be Miss America, Lol! I was also in dance classes my entire life, competed in a few local pageants and took on modeling & etiquette classes.

This all required me to wear makeup, have my hair done, and wear beautiful outfits! I believe this is where my love for all things beauty came about! As I got a little older I dropped the Miss America dream and wanted to become a model. I did a few things locally, throughout college, but I wanted to do runway and felt like I was too big and not y’all enough so I gave up on that dream as well. I got my first retail job at Forever 21 around this time & This is where I started to piece together outfits, learn about retail & fell in love with fashion! I felt like I had a natural eye for fashion & wanted to make a career out of it! (I never wanted a typical 9-5)I had a few retail jobs after Forever 21, but My goal was to work at a high-end company so I could gain clientele and become a stylist! I can’t tell you how many times I applied to Nordstrom, Neiman’s and Saks! They wasn’t feeling ya girl! I was over being told no so many times so I told myself that I would start something that would allow me to wear all the hats I’ve always wanted to wear & that’s how Versatile Ego was born.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Oh no! Being an entrepreneur is the hardest thing I’ve put myself through! When I first started I didn’t have anyone around to help or guide me! I dived head first in my business and spent all of my savings on it. Being that I didn’t understand the business I ended up shutting down my shop twice between 2014-2018. I lost my savings & was sitting on merchandise! I reopened again in March 2019 & it’s been good so far! I have a mentor now & she’s definitely been helping me so much with my brand!

Versatile Ego – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from others?
I grew up very shy and timid. I always enjoyed being to myself, but I’ve always done things like getting on a runway, giving speeches In a pageant & dancing in front of hundreds of people! You would never guess I was that shy. I also have always loved to dress differently than my peers! I love standing out! Sequins, plaids, prints, loud colors and unique pieces are my thing!

Versatile Ego is the name of my boutique. I have versatile style and my ego has always taken over! Kind of like my ‘Sasha Fierce.’

We offer bold & sexy statement pieces that speak for you. Our clothes are meant to act as an ice breaker, for the women that’s too shy to speak up! Our slogan is #LetYourEgoSpeak!

What sets us apart is our brand message & who we cater to! We cater to the introverts and we help bring out their inner ‘Sasha Fierce’ through fashion! When I first started I didn’t see many boutiques offering such bold pieces! We also show you how to style each piece in multiple ways!

I love that my boutique is a direct reflection of who I am & I know that there are other women in the world who can relate to my brand.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Good question! I think that everyone has a different definition of success. I personally define success by looking at my own accomplishments! I want to live a certain lifestyle, break generational curses & build generational wealth. I’ll always have different levels of success as I grow, but for now I will say when I’m able to pay myself a salary and run my business full time will be a great start!
