Rising Stars: Meet Ebony Kankam London

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ebony Kankam London.

Hi Ebony, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
In 2019, I walked into an Ulta Beauty store in NJ to get my makeup done for my baby shower. I showed the makeup artist my inspiration, in which she was confident she could achieve. About 20 minutes after I sat in the chair, she gave me a mirror and showed me my face, which looked half done. When I told her the look was incomplete, she responded, “You’re too dark for the makeup here.” I was so upset, but this was not a new ideology to me. Growing up, I was teased by my skin color and was made to feel ashamed of it.

The Ulta experience caused me to go viral and receive much media attention. This new attention gave me a platform. A platform to share my story and to encourage other women of melanin to live their life beautifully and in out loud.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The journey to influencing and activism within the Beauty industry has not been smooth. Many people still see darker skin tones as ugly. My DM’s are flooded with a mixture of people supporting me and those who feel as though beauty brands shouldn’t be inclusive of all skin tones and hues in their branding.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
As a content creator, I often try and make material that is both relatable and inspirational. It’s my goal to find a good space between creating content that makes people laugh but also reflect and connect it to their own life. Recently, I made a reel (instagram’s version of TIKTOK) in which I got a lot of views on. It wasn’t my typical beauty reel, but it resonated with so many mothers and wives who share some of the same feelings.

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
One of my biggest cheerleaders is Kim Roxie of Lamik Beauty. Kim and I met in the mist of my Ulta situation. She took me under her wings and has opened amazing doors for me. Recently, LAMIK Beauty launched a partnership with Ulta. Kim allowed me to be a part of her campaign for her new branding. I am always so inspired by Kim as she reaches new heights within the beauty industry. It def encourages me to keep pushing.
