Rising Stars: Meet Jummai Ghaji

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jummai Ghaji.

Hi Jummai, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
June 11th, 2021, I had just lost my job of three years with a telecommunication company. On that same day, I went for my friend’s surprise 40th birthday dinner, of which I told other friends in attendance that I lost my job and that I am thinking of starting a business grilling meat (suya). Surprisingly, my friends (Simbo, Eniola and Kifa) encouraged me that it was a good idea. My friend simbo owns one of the biggest African restaurants in Houston, as at then, she was planning a party for a client of hers, Simbo was my first customer, she ordered Suya worth $200, from that day I started marketing my business, opened an Instagram page and printed business cards, all these were achieved in 24hrs.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has been a smooth road. Suya on the spot has more out-of-state customers.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a certified Scrum Master, certified safe agilist and a certified project manager, I am also a Bachelor’s degree holder. What sets me apart is the fact that I am not afraid to try anything. I love to take risk if it works well, I improve and if it fails, I learn my lessons and avoid such mistakes in the future. I am very proud of myself for how far I have come, I don’t let anything bother me, especially things i don’t have control over. I am good at identifying opportunities and going after them.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
The most important lesson I have learned is never to expect anything from anyone. That way, your feelings won’t get hurt. I have also learned to do things for myself and not because I want to impress anyone.
