Today we’d like to introduce you to Danyelle Templeton.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Hair of Nature was created out of pain and love for me to regain my confidence back from hair loss. At 19 (2002), I was diagnosed with alopecia areata after the death of my mother. For me, when I stress out real bad my hair falls out and will not grow back. I found an amazing dermatologist who was treating me with a steroid shot and my hair grew back. At 27 (2011), I found myself expecting and a few weeks later, had a miscarriage, then two months later, I found out I was pregnant again and didn’t tell anyone till I was 16 weeks. I’m flight attendant, so at 24 weeks, I passed out on a flight, was put on bed rest as I was now considered high risk due to my test results. I begin stressing out because I didn’t want to think I was having another miscarriage.
Again, my hair started shedding and balding badly! My dermatologist would not give me the shot due to I was high risk and I didn’t want to walk around with a huge bald spot as it was embarrassing. I begin looking up natural remedies for hair loss and making sure it wouldn’t interfere with my pregnancy and I created a Revitalize Herbal Hair Oil. Hair grew back just in time for delivery of my healthy baby girl Annalise! As I thought, I put the thin hair to rest this was just the beginning. My maternity leave end when my daughter was six months and I returned back to work flying. Annalise developed my anxiety and begin pulling all her hair out to soothe her self to sleep due to me being gone 4-6 days a week. The hair oil I made for me was not suitable for her sensitive skin so it took trial and error to create something for her. SheaMango Scalp butter was my next product and it grew her hair. My sister Asia kept urging me to sell it but I had no clue on how or who to sell it to.
My classmate Eboni had a daughter 1 month older than Annalise who was suffering from eczema and I asked her if it was ok if I made her some products. She said yes, the results were shocking to her and I and she begin spreading the word for people to buy.
I have been in business a little over five years, have a following in India, United Kingdom, and Canada. It was not an easy task, being a single mom and handcrafting products but it was so worth having a mom say thank you, my baby feels beautiful or a husband messaging you that he got the girl he married back due to a boost of Hair Confidence. You can find more about my products at www.hairofnature.net.
Has it been a smooth road?
With creating a product out of your kitchen and not having a chemistry background it was hard trying to find:
1. all natural ingredients
2. natural or non-skin irritating preservative
3. funding
4. time
With me creating this while pregnant, I wanted to make sure nothing could harm my baby and I. Then when I started selling, I wanted to make sure the products had a stable shelf life and limit bacteria forming. I personally pay for everything out of pocket and realizing now I should have talked to a business advisor to guide me on how to get funding for my brand. As a single working mom, it tugs on my heart that I spend so much time away from my daughter and when I’m home, I’m doing orders and missing out on bonding time. 2018, I went through a really bad depression, which now I know it was needed. It made me slow down with work and really look at myself, my daughter and my business and made me make a game plan that works for all of us to be happy.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Hair of Nature – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
Hair of Nature started out as a hair care line for African Americans with curly hair. For our hair textured “natural,” it grows out curly and needs moisture and rich oils and butter to remain healthy and thriving. I use all natural ingredients and vitamins to make sure our hair and scalp remain healthy to grow beautiful hair. Every product I sell, I make!
Along this journey, I found out there are parents of kids who suffer from eczema who needs a “natural” “none chemical product” as too many commercial products irritate their skin/scalp that leads too flaking and hair breakage. There are multi-cultured ladies with curly hair who want a natural product that safe to use on their hair as well. As i grow, I continue to adjust as my customer base changes.
Hair of Nature stands out from other products as I’m very big on limiting use of harsh chemicals. Too many kids and young adults are being diagnosed with skin issues and every day you see warning about cancer-causing products.
My best seller is Healthy Hair Oil as it’s a blend of scalp nourishing oils that promote hair growth, natural shine and has an amazing mango fragrance. WARNING: If you use it, strangers are going to ask to smell your hair!
