Today we’d like to introduce you to Nina Spears.
Nina, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Eight years ago, I started helping families during their pregnancies, births, and postpartum journeys and I’ve never looked back! I’ve now assisted over 250 births and have helped over 500 families as an educator and professional in the pregnancy and baby world. It’s something that I truly love and I feel blessed that I get to help others grow in confidence and they grow their families. After helping many couples, I was quickly given the nickname “The Baby Chick.”
Over the years, I recognized that many expecting and new parents were asking me the same questions. They had the same thoughts and the same fears. I wanted to be able to share my experiences, my tips, and everything that I’ve learned along the way so they could know all their options, feel inspired, educated and empowered during pregnancy and for parenthood. That’s when my husband and I created Baby Chick, an online digital media company for the modern mom. We launched Baby-Chick.com in May 2015 and have since then reached millions of mothers all over the world. We cover topics from how to relieve morning sickness during pregnancy to handling a strong-willed toddler and everything in between. We believe that there is not one way to be a perfect mother but a million ways to be a good one.
With over 100 different contributors and professionals who have contributed to our site, we are a trusted site for all things pregnancy, birth, postpartum and parenting.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Is it ever a smooth road? I know it wasn’t for us. We’ve made plenty of mistakes along the way and we continue to push on and persevere. I feel like anything worth having takes incredibly hard work. The type of work that most people aren’t willing to put in the long hours and do. Things will never be easy if you’re trying to do something new or different. But that’s why most people aren’t willing to brave the rocky waters. They want the safety, security and the predictable, and that’s okay. But we who are willing to take the risk and follow our dreams just might achieve things that others only dream of. We also won’t live with regrets or ask “what if?”
Something that you have to remind yourself when you’re in the thick of hardships is that if you don’t win you LEARN. You’ll never lose unless you give up. Keep learning, keep pushing yourself and you’ll be surprised over time what you are able to accomplish.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into Baby Chick story. Tell us more about the business.
I wear many hats at Baby Chick. I am the CEO, I help manage our sales team, I do sales and work with our partnering brands, I write for our publication, I speak at pregnancy and parenting events all over the country, I host our podcast (Chick Chat: The Baby Chick Podcast), and tons more. I also work in person with families as a baby planner, birth doula, postpartum doula, childbirth educator, newborn care educator, and infant massage instructor. On top of all of that, I am also a wife and mother.
I specialize in the pregnancy, birth and the postpartum periods. I support families through these transitions so that they have an advocate, they know what all of their options are along the way, and that they feel empowered to make the best decisions for their families. Because of my training and years of experience, I’ve become known as “The Baby Chick” and am one of the top doulas in the Greater Houston area.
What I’m most proud of as a company is that we are known for being an unbiased website that supports all ways of birth and parenthood. Whether you decide to have a medicated or unmedicated birth, to breastfeed or bottle-feed, crib sleep or co-sleep, or authoritative parenting or attachment parenting, we support YOU. On our site, we share stories from all walks of life and are here to encourage and uplift all mothers. Baby Chick is all about education, inspiration, and positivity. That’s what sets us apart from others.
Do you have a lesson or advice you’d like to share with young women just starting out?
The most important advice that I can give is to really think about what truly makes you happy. If you like jewelry or clothing or helping others, or babies, there is so much that you can do. If you like jewelry you could become a jewelry designer or a gemologist; if you like clothing you could be a personal stylist, fashion blogger, clothing designer, or retail buyer; if you like helping others you could work for a non-profit, or be a doctor or a teacher; and if you like babies, you could be like me and become a doula and an educator or you could work at a daycare center or be a pediatrician or a NICU nurse. The options are almost endless.
Determine what problems you want to solve in the world and what brings you the most joy FIRST. Then, think about all of the different types of jobs that cater to those things. You’ll be surprised how many options there are. It will help guide you to a career that truly brings you joy.
