Meet Erinn Johnson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Erinn Johnson.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
Guess I’ll just start typing then, you know I always thought introductions were always cheesy in some sense lol. Where are you from?! What type of art do you do? Tell us a daunting story!?- Yeah, no. Honestly, I can’t limit my growth and artistic ability by labeling it “a story” because every day is the next page. In fact, the first time I began responding to this question, was over a year ago- a beautiful car accident became the highlight of my inability to finish answering this question-briefly. I can tell you that “now” I can acknowledge and describe the experiences of each transition. My transition with emotions, music, and ideas were a representation of who I was, who I represented, and briefly, that’ll signify the uniqueness in my journey so far.

Please tell us about your art.
“What do you do/make/create? How? Why? What’s the message or inspiration? What do you hope people take away from it? What should we know about your artwork?”

So to tie in all of these questions! Erinn is an adventurous, evolving, and traveling creator. I’m art. I think from a visual perspective no one is able to understand me or embrace my experiences unless I create it. As the director of creating, it’s an exploration of self. The content changes, there’s not an “accurate interpretation” of what I create- that I can put into words to define what my intentions are. In trying to express or explain why I create, it’s my way of contributing to the world; by recognizing the parts of me that I admire the most.

What do you think about the conditions for artists today? Has life become easier or harder for artists in recent years? What can cities like ours do to encourage and help art and artists thrive?
As an artist, we create those conditions. With the involvement of social media-the connections made with art; provide different ways of admiration, to the point where it gets lost. There’s a spectrum of (not easy and hard) but, for a few us, and I do mean a few- because everyone’s intentions aren’t to create. That is the underlying message I’ve witnessed in most cases is to the point where I can signify the differences in intentions. Erinn never makes art for gratification, reaction, nor for money. I enjoy the social experiment that takes place. I needed to say that before answering your question completely.

There’s “give and take,” and then there’s “being inspired by other artists without copying.” Learning new techniques is a blessing for me thanks to “now.”

But, in the great words of Gary Panter, “If you have one person that you are influenced by everyone says that you are the next whoever but, if you rip off one hundred people- everyone will say you are so original.”

One of the limitations of Houston art is that the Houston culture gravitates towards a specific “culture” to the point where it can overshadow the recognition of other talented Artists. Even for outside cities, I’ve ventured out to the Galleries or events set limitations on what’s being accepted.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
HERE COMES THE FUN PART! Lol.

Traveling artists have the most fun hands down! Almost like a game of “Where is Waldo?” I’m based in Houston but, it’s always temporarily. Most of my moves or art ventures are spontaneous so, the best way to find me or get in contact with me is on Instagram @love_erinn_. Not being a stranger is the best way to support my creative journey!
