Life and Work with Nelly Casper and Marisol Gonzalez Reyes

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nelly Casper and Marisol Gonzalez Reyes.

Nelly and Marisol, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Little did we know, that Creative Outlet would begin with a friendship in high school. Although we lost contact for ten plus years, we reconnected after being fairly new to motherhood. Our passion for art, nature, education and our impact on the planet was the inspiration behind Creative Outlet.

Two nature loving moms, tired of not having naturally engaging experiences for our toddlers. Some of our best childhood memories consisted of playing and learning outdoors. Today, the rise of technology and preprogrammed activities have left us feeling disconnected. Creative Outlet aims to rekindle the thrill of nature with parents and children alike.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Our road has been educational. The struggles we’ve faced are typical of most new businesses, however, the biggest obstacle has been facing those challenges with a toddler in tow. Managing motherhood and managing a business at the same time is a real juggling act.

Our advice for other women who are starting their journey is, do not isolate yourself, instead surround yourself with like-minded individuals, organizations and businesses. The right collaborations can offer a great deal of insight and exposure but even the collaborations that don’t go as expected serve as great learning experiences.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Creative Outlet – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
We believe that by introducing children to a lifestyle of creativity through nature we are ensuring a life of creative expression and mindfulness for our planet. Through Creative Outlet workshops, children are given the opportunity for physical and artistic expression while fostering a healthy lifestyle that positively impacts our environment.

We are most proud of getting children back outdoors, and empowering parents to facilitate that relationship with the natural world.

What sets us apart is that we take on the challenge of bridging the gap between nature and urban living. Houston is the 4th largest city and a pocket of wilderness is often hard to find. Part of our mission is to make nature a fundamental lifestyle and connect families to the outdoors regardless of the setting.

Often it feels as if the media, by and large, is only focused on the obstacles faced by women, but we feel it’s important to also look for the opportunities. In your view, are there opportunities that you see that women are particularly well positioned for?
Women are well positioned for an endless amount of opportunities. We think that opportunities are sometimes created by challenges, that being said, challenges are not always negative and serve to strengthen us. With determination and drive, we feel women can hold any position, even those outside of the ones that society has designated for us.
