Today we’d like to introduce you to Elizabeth Karen.
Elizabeth, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I’ve always loved reading magazines, mainly for the creativity and uniqueness of the photos in the ads. I grew up with cousins who modeled in pageants and since I was young, family and friends – even strangers – always used to tell me that I should be a model. When I was 19, I took a chance and had my first photoshoot with a local photographer. They saw a potential in me and helped me network with other photographers, and it kept rolling from there.
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I believe good art makes one feel something, so that’s what I try to do with everything I create. I like to break up my regular shoots with conceptual work to experiment with emotions that I don’t usually get to portray in the normal glamour setting. Fashion is fun because it can playful, fierce, or sexy. But concept art is a bit more complicated. In a sense, it can be very similar to acting – when I’m doing a horror shoot while covered in blood or body-painted as a character, I become that character for the day. I then have to adjust my thought process in order to best display the emotions that character should portray. It requires a completely different mindset than high-fashion modeling. And that opportunity – to become different characters with a variety of emotions- is what I enjoy best. I get a lot of inspiration from daily struggles and other personal experiences, from the music I listen to and the lyrics behind it. The beauty of nature is also a never-ending source of inspiration as well.
As an artist, how do you define success and what quality or characteristic do you feel is essential to success as an artist?
I try to avoid labels and stereotypes. I model lingerie, but I am not just a lingerie model. I am not just a fashion model. I work with creative minds and we break boundaries. To me, success means that I have a vision in my head that I was able to bring to life, and that I am constantly challenging myself to grow. It means that you are constantly evolving and developing yourself. You should never be afraid to push yourself and try new things, and that’s what I hope people can take away from the work that I create. Never be afraid of doing something because of what others might think or say; never be afraid to do something just because people have different expectations of you. Be yourself and love yourself for being a person who isn’t afraid to take on a challenge. No matter how many followers you have or how famous you are, what truly matters is that you love what you’re creating and that you’re proud of what you have done.
