Today we’d like to introduce you to Gisela Mottu.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Gisela. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I first stepped into the beauty industry five years ago but from working behind a desk for a large hair care corporation. I remember watching the artists and thinking of how it would be so exciting to showcase your talents while getting paid at the same time.
Though I was lacking substance in my work life, the consistent paychecks kept me comfortable working behind that desk. After a few years, I was suddenly let go from that position which to me was a huge disappointment at the time. Soon after that, I decided to take a leap of faith, already out of my comfort zone and started working on my business.
I began attending different beauty workshops and learning as much as I could. I soon realized my passion was creating art on a person and enhancing both their confidence and beauty.
I made connections with many photographers and started doing hair and makeup for fashion photo shoots, including Avante Garde looks, special effects, fitness shoots, and videos. It wasn’t until I worked on my first bride and seeing her reaction of pure joy when she saw her reflection is when I fell in love with working for weddings.
Has it been a smooth road?
Makeup artistry is one of the fastest growing industries with young entrepreneurs joining every day so you definitely want to stand out. But getting people to notice you and appreciate your talent doesn’t happen overnight. During my first year, it was mostly spent building my portfolio and working on clients all for very cheap or free. I wanted to quit so many times because I was investing so much time and resources and not seeing any results from it. Having patience and staying persistent is the key to being a successful makeup artist. You also will not be able to do this alone and making the right connections and building relationships with other professionals is a must. You can be the absolute best in your field, but without networking in the beauty industry, countless people won’t know you exist.
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
Apart from owning my own beauty company that caters to brides, I also provide microblading and am currently in school for aesthetic medicine. I have a passion for everything beauty related and have future plans for expanding my business!
It would be great to hear about any apps, books, podcasts or other resources that you’ve used and would recommend to others.
