Today we’d like to introduce you to Angie Emerson and Cisco Ruiz.
Angie and Cisco, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Six years ago, I began frequenting open mics around town (Clear Lake, Texas) with my old flute from 6th grade. I knew Cisco (my current music partner) from my parent’s wedding when I was just seventeen. He then took me under his wing and began to teach me about sound engineering. Before long, I went from singing in the shower to hosting my own open mics, running sound, playing flute and singing. I soaked up everything like a sponge. All of a sudden, I was hosting four open mics on top of my day job a began gigging four-hour cover shows around the area (Clear Lake/Kemah/Webster, Texas) on the weekends. I am 26 years old now and have been at it ever since. I now can play multiple instruments including the flute, guitar, baritone ukulele, and currently learning banjo, saxophone, mountain dulcimer, and harmonica. Last year, I went through a rough patch and, in turn, it forced me to start writing. I never believed I would become a singer/songwriter and now my dreams are coming to fruition. I am now working on my first album ‘Eclectic Souls” and hope to have it finished by the end of 2019. I am also an event coordinator that books and hosts singer-songwriter shows. I am always looking for new talent to showcase!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The music industry is cutthroat and you have to work hard to achieve your goals, just like anything in life. Success starts with you building, practicing, making appearances, business networking and so on. I am consistently tired and push myself to not only work my day job, but work nights and weekends as well. It doesn’t stop there, you have to practice every day and write new music. There’s really no off time, but I have found that you don’t work a day in your life if you love what you do.
Please tell us about Red’s XIII.
Our duo is unique by the mere fact that we have a wide selection of music and several instruments. We can do country, folk, classic rock, pop and now incorporating more originals into our set lists. We also have loop pedals and tend to solo off one another, learning new techniques each time we play live. We are very open to critiques and new music, whatever it may be. I like to explore music and incorporate those findings into our show.
Are there any apps, books, podcasts or other resources that you’ve benefited from using?
We typically use Facebook, Instagram, and our business cards. Our website is going to be made within the next few months. We also get featured in our local ‘scene magazine’ pretty frequently.
