Art & Life with Socha

Today we’d like to introduce you to Socha.

Socha made her humble beginnings singing songs to herself on the swings at recess. In middle school, she spent her afternoons writing angsty love songs and pretending she was in a movie. Although the themes in her music have evolved over the years, her love for dramatics and the sweet, beautiful things in life have remained steadfast.

Today, Socha is a moody alt-pop artist who bares her soul through her thoughtful and reflective songwriting. Her rich, pure, vocals intermingle with emotive melodies to evoke textures reminiscent of lavender tulle, opalescent glass, and seafoam. Above all, Socha seeks to explore and evoke the full spectrum of human emotions, from pain and self-loathing to pure bliss and freedom.

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
Since I’ve been writing songs for over a decade, I’ve reached this point where anything less than the honest truth is pointless to me. In my upcoming album, which will be released Summer 2019, I explore a painful period of my life, when it truly felt like my emotions might swallow me whole. The album is very much a depiction of this process of learning to ride those waves and hold on tight when the waves get rough. Above all, when writing, I seek to depict these feelings/situations/memories with as much clarity and honesty as possible. I end up writing in sort of a stream of consciousness style, and the songs become this depiction of the messy thoughts that occur in these moments of pain and crisis. It can be scary to present my feelings in such an unprotected way, but I do hope that others can find themselves in the songs, and find some peace in knowing they aren’t the only one.

Do you think conditions are generally improving for artists? What more can cities and communities do to improve conditions for artists?
I personally have loved how Instagram and other apps have made it so easy to connect with other artists in the area. I’ve met so many other musicians and visual artists through Instagram, and I appreciate how much love artists give each other.
I do think that with these apps comes a lot of pressure to keep posting consistent content. For me, my creativity does not function in one continuous stream, and it can be challenging to care for oneself when there’s constant pressure to produce. I’ve had to slowly practice prioritizing my joy and health, and allow myself to express the natural ebs and flows of my creativity and productivity.

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
I will be releasing my debut EP in the Summer of 2019. This album will be accompanied by beautiful visual collaborations with local artists and unique experience-focused events, inviting the community to take part in this expression. If you aren’t in Austin to check out these summer events, follow my Instagram (@sochasochasochasocha) for updates on the release and music videos!

Until that release, following me on insta, signing up for my newsletter at www.sochamusic.com, and listening to my EP (search “Socha Not My Body” on any music streaming site) are the best ways to support me!
