Meet Angela Fabbri

Today we’d like to introduce you to Angela Fabbri.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
My artistic journey started at a very young age. I was always drawn to creating. It was something that fed my soul in a way that nothing else could. I fell in love with painting when I was 17. A project in school where I painted realistically for the first time. No formal training or specific direction for this assignment, and I decided to paint a blue rhino with an orange background and the word “rhinoceros” backward over and over. When I finished, I couldn’t believe what had come out of me. Everyone was so complimentary of my painting of this blue rhino. It was then that I realized my passion was also a talent. I went on to explore my creative direction, painting various subjects, experimenting with textures, I even painted abstract for seven years. It wasn’t until 17 years after the blue rhino that I painted another painting with the same composition and backward lettering. I unveiled my series, Inversion, in the fall of 2017 which was based entirely on that one painting completed 17 years prior. This is my most recent series, and developing it is my focus for now. I will be unveiling a new collection of Inversion paintings at my popup in the River Oaks District this April. My pop up will be from April 6th – May 4th. My opening party will be April 6th from 1-5pm.

Please tell us about your art.
I paint acrylic paintings in both contemporary realism and abstract styles. My series, Inversion, is like a skittles box of colors that you get to hang on your wall. With the main subject floating front and center it’s easy to instantly connect. From there, my signature backward letters spark curiosity and lure engagement without you realizing that you’ve become fully present in that moment. Time is our most valuable currency and the details in my work are always hinting at that… sometimes screaming, like with my paintings of clocks where the message reads “Invest Wisely.” Fun fact, each of my Inversion paintings has a hidden message in backward messaging.

What do you think about the conditions for artists today? Has life become easier or harder for artists in recent years? What can cities like ours do to encourage and help art and artists thrive?
We live in a magical time for artists. With the internet and social media, we have at our fingertips we can easily reach around the world in a second. There are so many resources in Houston as well. Our arts community here is strong and very supportive. We have fabulous groups like Fresh Arts and the Houston Arts Alliance which provide educational and promotional opportunities in support of local artist.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
I create and show my work by appointment only in my studio at Silver Street Studios. I will also be showing my work at my pop up gallery in the River Oaks District this April. The storefront space I rented is between Stella McCartney and Harry Winston, and I will be open April 6th – May 4th. The opening party is on April 6th from 1-5 pm. Please check out my Instagram @Fabbriology for updates on events that I will be hosting in my gallery at the River Oaks District. Also, this October I will be showing at the Florence Biennale in Florence, Italy. It is such an honor to be invited to show at this prestigious, international contemporary art fair.
