Nanette is the franchisee for Once Upon a Child – Westheimer, and the store is managed by her daughter, Erica Holland. Nanette discovered Once Upon a Child when her first grandchild was on her way. Friends said to go to this resale shop to get a pack n’ play.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has not been a smooth road from financing to build out to open to buy and open to sell. I do not have any retail experience so each phase was a complete learning curve. Luckily for me I had support from the franchisor and professionals who helped me along the way.
Please tell us about Once Upon A Child – Westheimer.
Once Upon A Child is a children’s resale store that buys and sells gently used product. Our customers want quality children’s clothing and we’re excited that we can offer discounts up to 70% off of original retail prices and up to 50% off equipment. We offer payment on-the-spot for items we select that meet current style, safety and condition standards. We maintain high merchandise standards by thoroughly inspecting all toys and equipment for any safety recalls. We sell clothes, shoes, toys, books, baby equipment and furniture. We also have a selection of new product including hair bows, headbands, ties, bowties, belts, Melissa and Doug, Nuby, Buncha Farmers to name a few. We are not a consignment store like most resale stores.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I would not have done anything differently. I would just have more wisdom about how to go about getting through all the phases of putting together a new business.

- Tanks $1.50, T-shirts $2.50, shorts and skirts range from $3.50 and $5.50, most shoes range from $3.50 to $14.00
- Swings $60, pack n’ plays range from $25 to $80, strollers range from $40 to $100, walkers $20 to $40
- Bouncers from $12 to $30
