Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Lucas.
Sarah, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started SANNA when my daughter Hannah was born. I couldn’t find simple, good quality basics for her so I decided I could make something. I used my Mom’s sewing machine and she walked me through how to sew. I took to it very quickly and soon had made many little outfits for my girl. I soon had family, friends and even strangers asking if I sold the clothes I made and I decided to make a small business out of this fun new hobby. I started with an Etsy shop just selling bloomers and now, I have my own website. I named my company SANNA by using letters from my daughter and my son’s name. (Samuel and Hannah) With growth, like in any company, there comes lots of trial and errors, but I now have found my niche in the children’s clothing industry and get to work with local seamstresses to produce my designs on a larger scale. It’s been almost four years since my daughter was born and it’s been so fun to watch her grow up and play in clothes that I’ve made. My latest ‘feel good’ moment was getting my line into a really great store all the way in San Diego, CA!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Always room for improvements! Never think there isn’t! Some of the biggest mishaps have come from trying to overextend myself and my time. I am first and foremost a mom and that in itself is a pretty demanding job! I have to work really hard at maintaining a good balance between family and work. I have been able to do this by partnering with local seamstresses to produce my designs and while I can make everything I design, I don’t necessarily have to. Learning to let go of some things is the only way a business can grow, just make sure you find your people, the right people for the job!
Please tell us about SANNA baby and child.
I started out making only bloomers and I’d say people still come to me for that quite often but as I have been able to grow my line I feel, and would like to be known for, the elevated basics in my collection. They are handmade in Texas, as with my whole line, with high-quality double gauze and they are just perfect for everyday separates for babies and children. I think the bonnet trend is still going strong so those will always be in my line as well. I’m most proud of being a made in Texas clothing brand and I think that’s what makes me so unique from other children’s lines.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I love the lessons that I have learned but if I could start fresh I would have invested more in branding or social media at the beginning. I’m horrible at social media and pictures and should have realized that earlier on and hired someone amazing to do it! I would have probably prepared more too so that I could just dive in instead of slowly dipping my toes in the water!
