Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Baker.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
Art has always been a part of my life it seems. When I was younger it was drawing and painting, even a brief stint in cake decorating (don’t ask haha). My grandmother had taught my cousins and I how to sew and we would often work with her to design and make clothes for ourselves too. When I got older this grew into a deep interest in architecture. I loved the idea that a space I thought of could be a place people would feel a certain way, create memories in, and experience for themselves. I graduated with an undergraduate degree in architecture and am currently an architectural grad student at the University of Texas here in Austin. My interest in photography stemmed from a curiosity in capturing the people and places I was designing for. I found, about three years into undergrad that I was almost overstimulated with architecture and photography became a way for me to branch out artistically, shooting concepts and fashion that reached beyond the design realm and allowed me to continue to think creatively while disconnecting from the design side of my brain for a while.
Please tell us about your art.
I make my art and imagery for everyone, and that’s the message I hope reads through each image I take. A lot of my most meaningful concepts originate from conversations and experiences I have that I then use photographs to breakdown these observations so that I can better understand them myself and so others can be apart of the same dialogue from a different perspective and platform. I’m not the best with words so I tend to resort to photography to start these conversations instead. Most of the time a concept starts as a list of feelings or words, or a single image I have in my mind and then grows until there’s nothing left to do but make it into a reality.
Do you have any advice for other artists? Any lessons you wished you learned earlier?
Be authentic to yourself and do what makes you happy. Don’t create things you don’t connect with just because it will get you likes or someone asked you to, it’s a short-lived high. Also, not everything was created to be shared online or with the public, I know it seems that way these days, but some of your most meaningful work can literally be made for your eyes only.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
People can find my work mainly online via the gram or my website. I keep a blog which I regularly update (try to at least) with images and concepts I’m working on. I also am working on some shows hopefully for this summer. I believe there is something so special about experiencing photography in real life. In a day and age where we just swipe through thousands of images a day being able to pause in front of a printed image and really experience it can be life-changing.
