Today we’d like to introduce you to Lam Todd.
Lam, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I always had an eye for design and loved editing a beautiful photo. I remember back in college, I would download all the latest apps so I could add text or a beautiful frame to the picture. This was definitely before it was cool to do it for Instagram or Facebook! I then worked in corporate retail for ten years and loved working with consumer products. Being so close to the consumer really connected me to them on a human level and helped me gain expertise in consumer marketing strategies.
I started my social media agency with a love for all things in digital design — graphics, videos, and photography. I started taking photos for a friend’s business and loved curating, copywriting, and styling her products for social media. I knew that my eye for design and corporate retail experience was going to be a killer combo for digital marketing.
Has it been a smooth road? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way? Any advice for other women, particularly young women who are just starting their journey?
The hardest part for me was figuring out my target client. In the beginning, you just want to work with everyone to give your business some traction. As I began to get more clients through referrals and social media, I saw a pattern with my leads. Once I knew my ideal client and their struggles, I redesigned my monthly packages and even added more services to help solve their biggest social media headaches.
My advice for other women, particularly those who are just starting their journey is to be of service and value to others first and the sales will come. Opportunities will align with your purpose because your gifts to the world are special and unique. I also advise anyone jumping into entrepreneurship for the first time to save any money they can for a financial cushion. This will give you more peace of mind and allows time for your business to grow within the first year.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with LLT Creative – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
LLT Creative is a social media management agency. I provide digital services to small businesses who may not have the expertise, time, or resources in-house to effectively manage their social media presence. I curate, copywrite, and design all social media content that will drive people to your storefront or website. I also provide social media coaching for those teams who need to get up to speed quickly through one-on-one coaching and would like to manage their own accounts instead. I am known for creative and high-quality content design.
What sets me apart from others is the personalized service you will receive from a fellow small business owner. I understand how hard it is being a small business owner and every customer is important. That is why every client I have is important to me personally and will always receive high-quality content design and care. You can call me with a question and it’s nice to have a local Houstonian who understands you to answer the phone!
Were there people and/or experiences you had in your childhood that you feel laid the foundation for your success?
I am a first generation Vietnamese-American. My dad is a commercial fisherman and my mom works as a factory manager. I always remembered having free lunch in school and applying for scholarships obsessively to pay my way through college. I never enrolled in any dance or music lessons because we couldn’t afford them. I always had a job since I was 16 years old and I haven’t stopped working ever since, except to go on maternity leave! My humble beginnings made me work that much harder and laid the foundation for success later in life. Even though I faced some stigma or prejudice in the workplace for being an Asian-American woman, I just worked my tail off and always produced results. When you focus on the results, you can see the prejudice start to come down and you get to show people who you really are on the inside.
