Today we’d like to introduce you to Malek Binns.
Malek, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I am the owner and operator of FROSTED by Malek Binns and brother company, Sprinkled by Malek. I love to create special desserts for special occasions. I have been baking and decorating for almost nine years. I love being creative and bringing joy to my customers when I make the cake or cookies of their dreams!
I am just an average twenty-one-year-old who dreamt about doing what I love. A concept everyone strives for, but a select few live out in their daily lives. In 2017, I graduated with a AA in Pastry and Baking, from Le Cordon Bleu, School of Culinary Arts.
I always loved the world of baking and dreamt about it constantly while I was grinding out the 9-5. It was a battle. A battle I was sick of fighting, but one I was too afraid to wave the white flag at, in fear of failure.
After months of debate, I conjured up the courage to make a phone call that would forever change my life. By the end of the call, I had officially left that job to pursue FROSTED full time, and as I said, my life was forever changed.
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I love to bake and decorate custom cakes, and cookies for any event. My second business, Sprinkled, I create sprinkle mixes for your decorating needs. It can be for a birthday, wedding, baby shower, graduation, etc.
The message I love to portray is that I want to put that finishing touch on your event! I feel like every party or celebration isn’t itself without cake or cookies! I mean, think about it, have you see a birthday party without a cake?
One thing you should know about my artwork is that I am very creative and I show it. A plain cake or cookie is like a blank canvas. I love the fact that there are millions of ways to decorate a cake or cookie. That what makes it custom! You can draw, color, paint and be an artist!!
In your view, what is the biggest issue artists have to deal with?
I think the biggest challenge that many artists are facing today is not being confident. I have seen so many people not being confident enough, not just in their artwork, but in themselves. I have witnessed people who believe in the artwork, but they are too afraid to show out. They let their fear of what people may think of them to stop the process.
On my Instagram, I have so much personality and show it out proudly. I would advise to people, in order to be confident. You must have a passion towards your craft. You must always be positive and do not worry about what others think. If you get any negative comments, take that and learn from that, whether if it’s accurate or not.
I always tell people, if you don’t have any haters, you aren’t doing it right.
