Meet Andy Alicea

Today we’d like to introduce you to Andy Alicea.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
Growing up in the NYC area I realized there is so much beauty around me that should be photographed. I bought myself a camera and asked a good photographer buddy of mine if I can shadow him as he walked around the street of NYC to shoot. We ended up going into a rooftop, joining a photo walk, and attending a talk at Adorama. As intimidated as I was, the community made me feel comfortable.

I didn’t spend much time in NYC as a photographer before I moved to the Houston area. Not knowing many creatives here or anything about the community, I was really tempted to just sell my photography gear. Then a co-worker saw my Facebook and asked me about my photography. Honestly, if it wasn’t for him, I wouldn’t be where I’m at now with my work. His ambition and love for the art reminded me why I got into this, to begin with.

Please tell us about your art.
Although I started with landscapes, I’d have to say I really enjoy taking portraits and celebratory events.

As far as message and inspiration go, all I can say is do what you love. Whether or not it has to do with photography or not. Surround yourself with amazing individuals who push you and see your greatest potential. I’ve been truly blessed in that department. I have a few great photographer buddies and a lovely lady who believes in me sometimes even more than I do #TYC #ohsnap

Choosing a creative or artistic path comes with many financial challenges. Any advice for those struggling to focus on their artwork due to financial concerns?
Great question. I believe photography is a major part of our world and will always be hence the saying “a picture is worth a thousand words.” Truth is it can also be worth thousands of dollars. I normally don’t like drastic changes and like to test things before I dive in. I would say market yourself as much as you can. Keep putting out work. If someone reaches out to you chances are they like your work. If it’s something that doesn’t benefit you ask for a service charge. Also, don’t be afraid to put ads out there and let everyone know of the services you offer. Some would even book you just to support your creativity.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
My work has been published in a few small magazines I wouldn’t like to mention. For the most part, you can catch most of my work on Instagram @andyxavierphotography
