Today we’d like to introduce you to Victoria Larson.
Victoria, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
Ten years ago I got a tiny point and shoot camera that I would use to take photos of me, my friends, and my family. I’d force my sister to be my model and edit photos ridiculously in a picnic. All throughout high school, I continued to take photos. Eventually I started booking paid gigs, mostly family friends giving me a chance. Once I got to college, I started studying photography, and at the end of my sophomore year, I got a job with a popular local photographer. Working with him is when I really refined my editing skills and realized I could pursue a real career in photography. I’ve continued to go to styled shoots and recruit friends to jump in front of my camera whenever I can. My portfolio has really started to come together, and I’ve been getting inquiries for the coming year now!
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I feel like there are multiple types of photography that I work on. Professionally, I focus on weddings, couples, and portraiture. During college, the photographer I worked for was big in weddings in that town, and I assisted on over 30 weddings, which is when I realized that this was something I was passionate about and interested in pursuing. Weddings have so much love and joy its amazing when a couple chooses you to be a part of their big day. It’s also a wonderful feeling to get great portraits of people and making them feel good and extra excited about their day. I want every person I work with to walk away thinking that they had a great time and are excited to see the art that was created in our time together!
If you look at my more creative work, it splits into inanimate and portraiture. Every project I do usually has a life of its own, but I gravitate towards quirky, unsettling, and looking at things that others wouldn’t typically notice. Sometimes things that are ugly or boring or things that seem like they aren’t anything special if you isolate it or look at it in a different way it can take on a new definition or even. Whole new life. You can really see this come to fruition under my something different and a day in the life tabs on my website. I love looking at architecture, specifically and isolating or cutting things off to evoke a different emotion.
In your view, what is the biggest issue artists have to deal with?
I think comparison is the hardest thing every artist goes through these days. We are connected through social media which is amazing, but we can also see other artists who may be getting hired more often or traveling more, or whatever it may be, and it can make you feel inadequate. Or you can see other artists who have amazing work and then think that your work isn’t good enough. You just have to remember everyone’s work is different and everyone is at different points in their journey, the universe has a plan as long as you keep at it and remember what you want out of it.
What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
