Today we’d like to introduce you to Johnny Luu.
Johnny, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
It’s certain to say I did not expect myself to be in the position I am at today. Growing up, I had only one ambition: pursuing in playing collegiate tennis. Starting tennis at a young age of seven, without a doubt, I found what I loved to do and was certain of my future. By the time I was twelve years old, I ate, breathed, and lived the game. Practicing five to six times a week as well as traveling out of town every month for tournaments, I was creating substantial results in realizing my goal. All was going well, until my freshman year of high school when I received news that would change the course of my life. Unfortunately, the amount of investment put into my tennis was becoming too expensive. I had to accept the circumstances, which led to the collegiate dream being out of the picture. Suddenly, a huge burden was weighted upon me as I began to question my reason for living. Playing tennis was the one thing I knew I had love and compassion for. The last thing I wanted in my life was to settle down in a path I had no interest in.
Fast forward to my junior year of high school, I decided to join a photography class my school offered. My dad bought me a Nikon DSLR specifically for the class. I remembered not being able to take my eyes out of the camera, as I was so intrigued by its features. As I took my right index finger and pressed the shutter button down for the very first time, that was when I realized…I absolutely did not like taking pictures. I ended up despising photography class as I would constantly procrastinate, completing every single project my teacher assigned at the last minute. I remembered feeling so guilty by the fact my dad gifted me something I would end up resenting. However, it wasn’t until later in the school year when I noticed a little red button resting from the side of the DSLR’s shutter button. Being concerned, I decided to press it. That’s when I discovered my camera had video capabilities. Growing up as a fan of YouTube stars, nigahiga, kevjumba and Wong Fu Productions, I instantly had the idea to begin producing short skits for fun because I wanted to share my creations with friends and family, as well as making good use with my camera and time. What became a hobby at first turned into something more. As I felt the same adrenaline rush playing tennis when creating content, that was when I knew, creating videos was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Nothing in life is ever a smooth road. There are several obstacles I face as a creative but the biggest of all I believe is finding others around you who share the same vision as you. It’s one thing to have a whole idea mapped out from A to Z, but it is nearly impossible to execute if you don’t have peers who can relate with you. No matter what, always stick to what you believe and be sure it can happen. The right people will show up eventually.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Johnny Luu Video story. Tell us more about the business.
I produce short films, telling a story based on adventures I take myself through using visuals, music, and narration. Also, I am a freelance videographer who creates promotional content for clients and businesses. Aside from video, I have since then grown to enjoy photography as I would occasionally arrange photoshoots with clients.
