Today we’d like to introduce you to Renee Chin.
Renee, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I decided to become a self-care blogger to help others become more mindful and balanced. Here’s my story:
I’m not “normal” (who is right?). I didn’t learn basic self-care skills until I was in my 30s. I spent my youth neglecting my teeth, hair, nails, skin, and gut. I wasn’t a total heathen. I brushed my teeth, but the dentist didn’t see me for many moons. My sleep habits were atrocious and I fueled myself with unhealthy foods. I focused all my energy and spirit into academics and then my career. Nothing else mattered.
Hard work does pay off kids! I got everything I wanted in life and I HATED IT ALL. I worked as a lawyer in a swanky Beverly Hills office. Every day I locked the door, hid under my desk and cried. I thought my life was normal because it looked so pretty. Until life turned ugly and my body shut down. I had insomnia, anxiety and crippling chronic back pain which left me bed-ridden. The doctors couldn’t fix me. I was devastated.
I decided to fix myself. I quit my fancy job, said goodbye to toxic people and set some boundaries for healthy living. I underwent two years of physical therapy to heal my body. Y’all it was a struggle, but I learned so much about self-care.
Fast forward… seven years later and my life is so happy. Best of all, I’m a mommy! It’s truly a miracle. With all my struggles, I never thought I could be a mom. Having a healthy family is a miracle. I find a lot of joy in writing, sharing my story and reminding myself and others to practice self-care.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I struggled with learning new skills related to blogging and social media platforms as I started my blog. However, I found support and guidance from other bloggers on Facebook support groups.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Be Well Space story. Tell us more about the business.
My blog focuses on self-care. My primary areas of interest are meditation, yoga and good eats. However, any activity that helps nourish the body and mind are of interest. I’m different from other wellness bloggers in that I’m not trying to push any cleanses or diets. I don’t believe in following any sort of diet. Further, I’m a beginner yogi and I just support movement and ease. My blog is accessible and not meant to be aspirational. Lastly, I incorporate a lot of simple meditation and breathing exercises but apply them to everyday life. For example, meditation for hangovers or road rage. I try to make self-care more of a norm and less of a “woo-woo” out there concept.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I think I’ve been fortunate in my ability to create careers. I started my own law practice after being unhappy in various law firm environments. After I moved to Texas, I realized that being an attorney was not for me. Then I was able to reinvent myself as a wellness blogger and mommy.
