Meet Victoria Callaway of VCI Artists in By City Center

Today we’d like to introduce you to Victoria Callaway.

Victoria, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started working at a cosmetic counter at age 17 and then left College Sta to move to Denver for three years while attending college. Afterward, I moved back home and really got lucky to meet the right people and I became a national makeup artist for Lancôme traveling around all 50 states. I got married and had to expand my skills to tv/film hair and makeup. I started w a local agency and now I run my own agency that specializes in hair and makeup for film/tv, print work, music videos, national political campaigns and whenever someone needs a specialized artist, we can fill that booking. Vciartists has 15 artists in the southern states and we are continuing to grow.

Has it been a smooth road?
I think hard work pays off. I’ve worked seven days a week for many, many years. Now that we have expanded to hiring a booking agent, I can actually take a vacation and not work through the entire vacation. The struggles were balancing a home life and building an agency. You always have guilt when you’re not spending more time with your kids and your husband. Then you have guilt when your off with your family and not being able to work these amazing jobs that come through.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with VCI Artists – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
We only do hair and makeup for what’s is front of the camera. We only have a small percentage of our business is house calls because our television work keeps us very busy. We are known for great customer service and booking a job that might be in 30 min because someone forgot to book an artist for their job or we can book a music video with ten fantastic artists working behind the scenes. During Super Bowl, we booked 49 bookings in five days. I always book the right artist for each job, it does not matter if it’s someone from our agency or if I need to find other freelance artists to fit the clients needs. We have such a great community of wonderful artists in Houston! I’m so proud of how our artists have grown with their exp and built their confidence as their jobs get bigger and they work on a larger platform.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
H town rocks!!!! It is such a warm and welcoming city and it really is fantastic to be a female business owner in Houston! You are supported by other women!!! We do very little advertising because most of our business is word of month. Houstonians really help connect people to build small businesses and they think nothing of it. It’s just second nature for someone to say… you should meet my friend or neighbor and that’s how businesses grow. It’s the most amazing city to live in and see the kindness that others will always lend a hand when someone is in need. I really liked living here before but after a Harvey and seeing true Generosity now I really really love, love living here because the Houstonians are the best in the world.
