Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Hebert.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I find it ironic that my dad seemingly doesn’t understand why I’m so obsessed with making music considering he’s the one who handed me my first guitar 22 years ago. I was 8 when he taught me “Blackbird,” and I grew up watching him perform in country bands. He’s always been, my hero.
It wasn’t until I was 28, however, that life put my back against the wall. I wrote and recorded my first EP with King Graint while I was homeless. I had just lost my job, my home, everything I had worked so hard for due to unforeseen heart ailments and Vasovagal Syncope. I’m telling you, life has a funny way of putting you on track with your purpose through deep trials and pain if you can just focus on something positive and stay productive.
A year later, a couple of songs I was featured on with Riff Raff and Conway made it to the Billboard Charts.
All I can say is, life is wild.
Please tell us about your art.
Growing up, writing was my release. I’m a heavy introvert, which surprises many. I have a lot of emotions, and I don’t know what to do with them. Putting on a track and letting these emotions rise to the surface allows me to process and release what I’m sometimes unknowingly feeling. Lord knows I’m not the only who feels these things, and this became brazenly apparent when people began telling me how “Edge of The Earth” spoke to them. It’s the most vulnerable and raw song on my EP.
It’s hard because to understand my message, you have to know my story. Everything positive that has come out of my own life was initiated by some of the most chaotic and terrifyingly uncertain circumstances. I just want people to know that’s where the growth is. That’s where you find your character and determination as long as you don’t lose hope.
What do you think is the biggest challenge facing artists today?
You mean outside of the extreme flood of people making music and feeling like just another person? Haha.
I think the biggest challenge is not losing sight of reality. By reality, I mean what’s in front of you and not on your phone. I’ve had to log off of social media so many times to recenter and refocus. At times it can feel like you’re living multiple lives because social media and Marketing is such a major aspect of what we do. It can become psychological warfare if you can’t learn to compartmentalize and stop comparing yourself to other false realities online. It’s all a show, and it’s part of the game, but don’t give so much of your mind and soul to it that you lose sight of who you actually are.
