Today we’d like to introduce you to Savannah Blue and Desirae Mock.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
Savannah is the founder of SBAO a 501C3-non-profit where they serve the community through the presentation of cutting-edge performance poetry. Savannahs flagship event is the Bayou City Poetry Slam created in 2010. It features top names from the Poetry Slam circuit. The Slam has won recognition throughout the US and Savannah was recognized in Dallas for the Top Poetry Slam in Texas in 2016, and Chicago recognized her in 2017 as the best-Spoken Word Organizer in the Nation. In 2015 SBAO began a partnership with The Alley Theatre to host BCPS throughout the coming years. They have been so impressed with Savannah; she is now a committee member of Syncing Ink a hip hop play out of New York. SBAO was awarded an organizational grant through HAA to host the cities first homegrown 2-day Poetry Festival at Houston Community College and Alley Theatre with over 1,000 people in attendance both days. She created Women On The Bayou with over 500 in attendance at UoH and WOB was standing room only at Alley Theatre in 2019. Savannah received attention from KHOU Creative Director to help facilitate and organize their 1st Super bowl Poetry Commercial, Houston Stands (Harvey), and their World Series commercial. Two of the Poets selected for the Super Bowl spot went on to win an Emmy, and the others were nominated. Savannah won a 5-year contract through HCDE to start an after-school/summer school Poetry program throughout various HISD and Alief School Districts and partnered with Hobby Center for a summer HISD event. Savannah was awarded the Black Girls Excellence Arts & Culture Award. She co-wrote and directed the stage play “Voices” with her 2nd play set to be released in 2020. Savannah has taught Poetry seminars at UofH, Lamar, and have been a guest speaker at Prairie View for Women’s History Month. With the success of Savannahs nonprofit, she decided to open up a Photo Booth Experience agency called Snapix Events; it was her daughter Desirae Mock that said “Mom” you should look into the photo booth business, people love taking pictures. Savannah started researching and developing a plan to open her next venture. With the help of her daughter, Snapix Events was born. Savannah is the behind the scene person of Snapix, who implements and creates. Desirae is the technical side of Snapix, assuring each event runs smoothly the day of. We started out with one Mirror Photo Booth, and less than two years later we are now proud owners of the Mirror Photo Booth, Gif/Boomerang Social Booth, Vogue Photo Booth, Karaoke Photo/Video Booth, 360 Photo/. Video Booth, Roxie The Robot Photo Booth, Roamer Hand Held Booth, LED Inflatable Booth, Slow Motion Photo/Video Booth, and our Catwalk Video Booth. Snapix has become one of the leaders in the industry. With our growth, we were able to bring aboard a new member Ms. Stella Kendall. Stella has been the driving force behind all our marketing and promotions and website designs. We didn’t want to be known as just a photo booth company but a photo experience agency. We started aiming at Corporate clients and assisting with Corporate Branding Activations and Corporate Special Events. Please tell us about your art.
Well, I would describe myself as an artist that create visions, whether it be a poem that reflect the emotions that I bring to life via words and the craft of performance poetry. Or, whether I create the vision for future brides on their wedding day by creating a memorable photo experience or bringing to life a brand through corporate branding activations. I do what I love and what I am good at, and that is “Creating Visions.” I believe we all have a hidden talent or passion that drives us every day. I’ve been one of the lucky ones who realized many years ago at the age of 4 or 5; I was destined to have a love for the arts. I remember watching a friend playing the piano and how I longed to take piano classes. I remember watching a very popular TV sitcom called Fame, and I would cry every time it came on because the idea of watching anyone who had so much love and passion for the arts, as they did, on this sitcom touched me. I would watch in admiration for all forms of the arts, and to this day I am still an advocate and still get emotional watching dancers, singers, and Poets as myself leave their heart and soul on stages across the world. I love the feeling of making people happy with my creations. It’s a very fulfilling experience to see someone watch and listen closely as I perform very intimidate details of my life through my words or social topics I feel very strongly about. To know I am helping others who may have experienced any kind of trauma or those who just don’t have the courage to stand up and speak or fight for themselves, I feel I am one of the many Poets who can and will help speak for them. I am a Poet Activist, and I create spaces for all, I am the voice that will carry for many years to come.
Do you have any advice for other artists? Any lessons you wished you learned earlier?
My advice would be to always be the best you can be and never give up on your goals. Success comes with trials and tribulations, but only those who are 100% committed will stand strong. I believe you must surround yourself with positive energy via positive people. The most common mistake I believe not only myself have made, but others and that would be allowing “Negative Energy” in our circle. What I mean by that is allowing the non-believers in what you believe in to come into your life and your circle of energy and create doubt in you and others that are close to you. You have to learn very fast, how to become a reader of energy. This is especially important for those of us who are sensitive and our moods are based a lot on energy. I would say “Never” be afraid of who you are as an artist of any kind and keep on your path, and you will succeed. Have a sister or brother circle of people that you can go to and you know without a doubt they are there for you 100%.
