Meet Trailblazer Melanie Malone Criswell

Today we’d like to introduce you to Melanie Malone Criswell.

Melanie, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I grew up in real estate through my mother, who has been in the business since I was ten. Between open houses, showings, and being at her office, I fell in love with homes of all shapes and sizes… both their design and construction. This led to a degree in interior design, my inevitable place in the real estate industry, and my small business drawing homes for people all over the country.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Now that I’m older and feel like I have actually found my niche, it’s easier to look back and see what has led me here. Each somewhat seemingly “random” job taught me something, introduced me to special people who helped me grow as an individual, and made me unique for the certain jobs that I do. My advice to young people would be to make the most out of every situation and never burn bridges. Every experience you have will mold you into the person you are meant to be.

We’d love to hear more about Meadows Property Group.
Because of my background in design, I have so much fun going through houses and helping my clients see what a place can be with just a little bit of time and money. I love seeing the light in their eyes when they realize what I’m thinking for a space. As for the drawings, when we bought our home five years ago, I drew our house and made the drawing into moving cards. The realtors at my office saw them and started ordering some for their own closing gifts. This blossomed into a full small business that feeds my right brain and gives me a great deal of satisfaction.

So much of the media coverage is focused on the challenges facing women today, but what about the opportunities? Do you feel there are any opportunities that women are particularly well positioned for?
I feel like women can do just about anything they set their minds to. We need to play up the strengths of our sex… grace, vulnerability, strength under pressure, the ability to multi-task, etc. God made us different and special in our own ways and we must take advantage of the tools we possess as individuals.
