Today we’d like to introduce you to Jasmine Kossie.
Jasmine, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
As a child, I actually grew up in front of the camera. My father took many photographs and recorded hours of priceless video footage of me. Looking back, I believe this is where my passion for capturing life’s moments began. It was inevitable that I found my home behind the camera.
In high school, I can recall shooting hundreds of photographs of my friends and family with disposable cameras. I remember asking mother to take me to Walmart to get film developed every month. At the time, I thought I was merely taking pictures, but in reality, I was slowly growing my craft as a photographer.
In my senior year of high school, I got the opportunity to use a professional grade camera for the first time and I was hooked. This led me to pursue photography as a major in college at Sam Houston State University where I joined multiple organizations as the historian. It wasn’t long before I began to be known as the “camera girl” around campus and was getting requests to do photoshoots. After graduating in 2012, I moved to Houston, Tx and began photographing professionally. I thank God that seven years later, I’m still doing what I love, making those beautiful yet fleeting moments last forever.
Has it been a smooth road?
I praise God the road hasn’t been too rough but there have been some bumps along the way. I spent many hours growing my craft but didn’t consume my self with how to do business taxes, accounting, or how to write contracts. I would encourage any young woman in the field of arts to also learn the business side. Another piece of advice I would give is to put God first and to have patience.
Which women have inspired you in your life?
My mother has been my greatest female inspiration. She is a hard worker who loves God and has taught me to do the same. Both of my grandmothers have taught me persevere through hard times. With their love, support, and guidance I am the woman I am today!
