Meet Justin Johnson of HHTXLOOKBOOK in Central Houston

Today we’d like to introduce you to Justin Johnson.

Justin, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
The foundation of this business initiated because of my desire for videography. Through videography, I found myself not knowing so much about lighting and nothing about a camera. So I had to start at square one with photography. Though they work hand in hand, videography involves motion. Being that Houston has so many photographers, I said to myself, “How could I stand out more as a photographer?” I knew I had style, and people would always ask me about the items I wear. Then I decided, let’s just mix fashion and photography together but with a twist. Let’s challenge the public to produce a complete outfit ensemble under $150. I knew this would help me improve my skills as a photographer and would also help local stylish Houstonians display their unique style. When I shot my first 4 or 5 models, more ideas erupted from my head. I decided to make this a competition where the public votes on whose outfit was the best for that month and then we would present that individual with a monetary award.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
This has not been a smooth road at all. Some of the struggles I faced were stepping out of my comfort zone and looking for talent willing to work with a novice. I was worried about the amount of declined offers I would receive. Another struggled I faced was directing my talents and operating my camera. It’s more to a camera than just snapping a picture. As times got better, I received a lot of constructive criticism from other photographers and friends on how I could make myself better as a photographer. Some of my current obstacles are finding more ways to keep this business at the public interest. With so many booming bloggers in this generation, I want to figure out more ways to stay fresh, current, and relevant.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about HTXLOOKBOOK – what should we know?
My business focuses on fashion under a budget and commercial photography. I hunt for local Houstonians who are willing to take the challenge and show what outfit ensembles they can come up with under $150. I am most proud of the progress, the number of strangers who understand and support my business. What makes me most proud is when I see the models promote my work. An individual who knew nothing about a camera. That’s what makes me most proud. What sets me apart from others is my integrity.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I have many friends and family who support and give me advice on my business. (I.e., Kanesha Walls, Norvell Harris, Deanna-Kelly Williams, and Joshua Conely.
