Meet AJ Gulla and Stephen Jung of Ratchet Hatchet Axe Throwing in North Montrose

Today we’d like to introduce you to AJ Gulla and Stephen Jung.

AJ and Stephen, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
It all started when we were three years old… Just kidding. We are two Houston born and raised high school besties that love the city of Houston and have always dreamed about collaborating as business partners. A few years ago, we went on a bachelor party trip to Montreal, Canada and were lucky enough to experience axe throwing for the first time. Immediately we were hooked and thought that Houston would be an amazing city for the sport of axe throwing. Houston is such a large and diverse city that would love the thrill and excitement of axe throwing. From then, we have just been having a good time introducing the sport of axe throwing to the fun and outgoing people of Houston.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There have been plenty of road bumps on this business journey that we are taking. Trying to find a landlord that would be open-minded enough to take a chance on our business would probably be our biggest hurdle. There are other smaller struggles that we have experienced but, being first-time business owners, we have just tried to learn as much as we can and maintain a positive outlook to stay focused on our business.

Ratchet Hatchet Axe Throwing – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We are an indoor axe throwing facility that focuses on safety and having a good time! We provide a safety briefing to ensure that all safety rules are understood while throwing and then provide instructions on how to throw an axe safely and properly in order to stick your bullseye. We are a BYOB facility so people can bring their own drinks and food as well. We have had numerous team building outings, birthday parties and bachelor/bachelorette parties where our customers have catered their own food and drinks. It’s like a fun axe throwing party! With that being said, we want our customers to know that they are in a safe and controlled environment. We love playing music and interacting with people so that we know everyone is having a good time. We are most proud of the safety we provide for our customers. As you can tell, we are very big on safety.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
We are very proud of the positive feedback that we get about axe throwing. We are so proud of the experience we provide to our customers and the amount of fun they have trying new things!
