Today we’d like to introduce you to Aubrey Scott.
Aubrey, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Growing up in the Dallas, TX Metroplex I established an entrepreneurial spirit at a very young age. As a youth, I recall having a lawn service at the age of 12 that generated approximately $200-$300 per week. My strategy was to undercut the competition by 40%; while winning over other neighbors through exemplary character I had displayed prior to pursuing my business ambitions. This business venture started off with a few weekend appointments that I could easily maintain alone, however quickly transitioned to a bit more than I could handle. Within a couple of weeks my small lawn service grew from 3 to 10 weekly appointments respectively. I was fortunate to have some good friends that would help me maintain the workload through the summer/fall, but I learned a valuable lesson in business at a young age. That important lesson was being able to adapt to unexpected challenges. My parents instilled the importance of work ethic, education, overcoming adversity, and most importantly a strong spiritual faith which became deeply embedded within the DNA of my siblings & myself. The expectation in the Scott household was set high, and I owe a great sense of gratitude to my upbringing and the structural foundation set forth by my parents.
I would start my banking career in 2012 shortly after graduating from Tarleton State University with a degree in Accounting (BA). I was privileged to be offered a job opportunity from a lifelong mentor who would provide me with the essential qualities to flourish as a young African American male in corporate America. Under his leadership, I learned the importance of humility, accountability, and evaluating how he managed relationships with clients & internal business partners would be a trait that I adopted and pride myself on to this day. During my tenor with this employer I was promoted on three different occasions, and in 2015 was extended the opportunity to relocate from Dallas to Houston for a Team Lead role in the Middle Market Sector. This experience would help mold me into the business professional I am today. In 2017, I jumped at the opportunity to join the largest trade bank in the world. I would leave behind many well-established relationships, however the International experience I would gain would without a doubt mold me into a more polished Banker.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I’m a firm believer that nothing worth having comes easy. I was 27 years old when I relocated from Dallas to Houston for the Team Lead/ Management role. To be in a position of this magnitude so early in my career was a bit premature in the minds of several of my then colleagues. They did not however know the weekly constructive criticism sessions I had undergone with my mentor over the previous years that would prepare me for the next chapter of my professional career. He made it a priority to ensure that I thrived within the organization, and I was so grateful for the opportunity that I would have run through a brick wall to keep both of our reputations intact.
