Today we’d like to introduce you to David Sanders.
David, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started working at a young age helping my dad with side jobs, mowing lawns, and cleaning up after our community carnival. When I was 15, I started working in the restaurant industry as a dishwasher and worked my way up to management. I attended the University of Houston Bauer College of Business and received a degree in Finance while working full time. I was the first to earn a college degree in my family and working in the restaurant industry I learned the value of not only hard work but a passion for service. Out of college, I started working in customer service for a large home builder. I was with them for five years in various roles before going out on my own which lead to the founding of William David Homes. During my time of finding our footing, I owned an outdoor living company and worked on staff at a large non-denominational church. My time on staff at the church ignited my passion to include helping others through our business both locally and abroad. William David Homes was founded by starting a Build on Your Lot program and has now expanded to multiple master-planned communities where we are known for quality and customer service in the high-end luxury home market.
While we have won multiple awards, I am most proud of our team and industry partners for our charitable projects including building girls homes with Rescue Pink in India, local refugee homes, construction of pavilion for Camp Hope in Houston, Dan’s House of Hope in Houston, and many home repairs for those in need. None of these things would be possible if it wasn’t for the hard work of our team, our vendors, and our clients trust to build.
Many people ask if I have a business partner but William David is a name derived from family names and is actually my first son’s first and middle name. I hope that our business is a place my four children can find areas to use their own talents in the future whether that be design, business management, or investing in our community.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It hasn’t been and I am most thankful for the struggles. I believe that in being an entrepreneur you grow the most in your struggles. As you grow your business, you will always feel the struggle or worry about whether or not you’re going to make it. Our first inventory home although it won an award, we lost 50k on it. Most people would have quit and most probably thought I should have but we learned so much about how to structure our spec building and how to push through the tough times. As William David continues to grow our footprint, we are also working on how to serve our clients better. Unfortunately, some of those teaching moments have been based in places where we have dropped the ball. While we are highly rated in service, we still make mistakes and look to not make those mistakes twice.
Please tell us about William David Homes.
I’ve never understood the perception that people are shocked that you actually like your builder at the end of the process. We want to change that. To me, building a high-quality home, having a creative team, and the checks/balances to ensure those should be expected and really “standard.” At our price point, creativity and quality are easy. Our goal is to make the process fun, easy, and transparent. I tell our team all the time that this is the most intimate, expensive, and emotional thing our client is involved in right now or possibly ever no matter what the price point is. And we take that to heart!
With William David Homes, you will have the most transparent process, integrity, communication, creativity, and fun! As the leader, I will fight to make sure we serve our clients and community well.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I am honestly not sure I would have changed much because I truly appreciate the lessons I learned from our failures or bad decisions. I enjoy the game, the goals, and the missed shots that comes with being an entrepreneur.
