Conversations with the Inspiring Amber E. Williams

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amber E. Williams.

Amber, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My career began as a high school English teacher. It was my life goal to teach in a classroom! I experienced great success as a teacher and caught the attention of campus leadership which began my ascension into school leadership. Over the years, I held a variety of campus leadership titles and rose to the rank of Principal. I have served as a principal of two high schools. As a principal, I recognized the importance of mentorship, coaching, and effective professional development in order to lead well, while maintaining sanity. It became my passion to provide this type of support to other leaders in the field of education as well as in entrepreneurship. I ventured out on my own to start my consulting company with the mission of supporting leaders and aspiring leaders. So that they can feel supported and experience success. I have been in business for about three years and throughout that time, I have had amazing experiences and learned many lessons that I freely share with others. I have also published two books in the process.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Entrepreneurship is not easy! There are highs and causes for celebration and there are lows that make you want to give up. I coach clients on shifting the mindset from the 9 to 5 mentality to one of entrepreneurship. Your work has to be productive and effective–you don’t get paid just for putting in time or clocking hours. A big struggle, especially in the service industry, is learning how to work with the variety of people that you come across, whether as colleagues, business partners, or clients. You have to remain professional, even if others are unprofessional. Also, income ebbs and flows, no matter how effectively you strategize and plan. Big businesses experience this as well as small businesses. My advice for other women getting started is to find a mentor and invest in a coach. No one is doing anything new which means someone out there knows how to do what you’re trying to do. Get advice, ask for help, take advantage of free information. Lean on your network and pay it forward. It may sound cliche but don’t give up! Often our biggest breakthroughs are just on the other side of our biggest challenges!

The list is long! I have been blessed over the years to have phenomenal women as coaches and mentors. These women have poured into me tirelessly to mold me into the woman that I have become.
